Pop-ups, Pop-ups, etc. only on XP

B

Bob Eyerly

Countless Pop-ups only while using XP. Pop-ups are from
companies claiming to stop Pop-ups due to software glitch
in XP. Firewall does not stop these Pop-ups. If there is a
problem in XP, where is the fix from Microsoft?
Anyone know a solution other having to buy the software
from these pirates?
Thanks

There are few optnions here.

a) you have Messenger Service Pop-ups. In this case this should help you
out. Messenger Service

b) you visit certain site on the internet using your browser and when you
open this page you get a pop-up. You can add the address to restriceted
sites and this will prevent opening any pop-up windows.

c) it is possible you ware "infected" with software like "Gator" that is
addware and is poping up windows. In this case you should install the
software that will remove this Addware from your PC. You can use Ad-aware
free software. You can download it from this address
http://lavasoft.element5.com/support/download/

Don't forget to update it every now and then (just like Antivirus).

Hope this helps,

Mike

Download Netscape 7.1 and use it as your Browser and Mail & Newsgroup
client and you will never get Pop-Up and JUNK mail (Spam) again. All my
junk mail gets filtered in to the Junk Mail Folder and then get deleted
in xx amount of days. I being able to specify xx amount of days. All
Pop-Up are blocked except the one I want. If you are interested go here
to get the 7.1 version of Netscape.

Bob;
No need to pay for the fix.
For Messenger Service ads:
You need to install or enable a firewall:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=330904
Disabling Messenger Service can be a good idea, but it does not solve
the real problem.
The ads are not the real problem, the ads are only a symptom.
The real problem is open ports that allow unwanted traffic into the
computer.
Disabling Messenger does nothing for the open ports.
The firewall controls the traffic.

Internet Connection Firewall will not work if you have AOL.
AOL is not compatible with Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall
(ICF)
If you have AOL, you should contact AOL and/or get a 3rd party
firewall.

Disable Messenger Service:
Start/Control Panel, click Administrative Tools, click Services.
Go down to "Messenger".
Right click "Messenger" and select Properties.
Then under Start-up select DISABLE
Click OK and follow prompts

Check this link:

Run Ad-Aware (free version) or Spybot to check for spyware:

Or

I just cannot advocate using Netscape when there are other methods out there
that work as well and would ACTUALLY protect you instead of just
blocking/sorting them.

Download spybot from www.security.kolla.de it seems to
pick out more spyware and adware than the lavasoft one,
it's free too! If you are having popups with the big
bullseye logo type "how to get rid of purity scan" into
google and there is info from a chap who found how to get
rid of the adware implant. I followed the instructions
step by step and no more pop ups!!! Phew!

These monograme pop-ups target XP which carries the
messenger function that MS claims to be the biggest
improvement. Simply disable the 'Messenger' function.
Control Panel>Performance Maintenance>Administrative
Tools>Services>Messenger (change Startup Type from Auto
to Disable). Good Luck.

While nobody including myself prefers AOL, its 8.0 Plus
does a good job in Pop-Ups controlling (save XP
machines). Nonetheless, their techs told you to be
patient because AOL 9.0 which is about to be launched in
A FEW MONTHS (if you can wait) can help MS to solve XP
users' problem.

Microsoft doesn't really have a problem in this area.
Certainly not one that can be solved by AOL.
AOL uses a proprietary system that is not compatible with Windows XP
Internet Connection Firewall.
That is AOLs problem that AOL will solve.

Where did Microsoft "...MS claims to be the biggest improvement"
Messenger Service is not new but it is a valuable tool for many.

Also you need to read an earlier post of mine.
Disabling Messenger is a poor solution.
The firewall is the better solution unless you have no care about who
sneaks into your computer.

Justin;
A properly configured firewall stops Messenger Service.
If your firewall is ineffective at stopping Messenger Service ads,
either your firewall is not configured properly or worse is not
functioning properly.
Check this link near the bottom and it lists the ports:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=330904

I never suggested Messenger Service is not needed, in fact I suggested
otherwise if you read an earlier post of mine in this thread.
Disabling Messenger Service is a BAD fix.

You do not need 3rd party applications, however you need an effective
firewall (ICF will stop Messenger Service.)

Yes, a patch for messenger so outside IP's cannot utilize it in a malicous
manner;

You obviously haven't run a network monitor scan on the packets that come in
- they're forged, and so the source address is not necessarily outside of
your network. Any patch that works the way you suggest would occasionally
pass through messages - an unreliable patch is no patch at all.
"It is not needed since adequate tools have always been a part of Windows
XP.";
Are you saying the Messenger service is not needed? Please clarify;

A patch to the Messenger service is not needed, because there's a firewall
in Windows XP.
Adquate tools? I'd rather not enable ICF because I'm running a webserver;

A web server that isn't behind a firewall is a risk waiting to happen. You
don't have to enable ICF - you could use whatever firewall is built into
your router. Just make sure that you block all ports except for those that
your web server uses (80, 443, usually). I don't recommend allowing all
ports except those known to be a problem, because that's historically proven
to be a bad security methodology.
And I'd rather not disable Messenger service because it comes in handy for
it's purpose.
I do have a firewall but it still doesn't block this misuse;
which brings on a question... can I allow/disallow specific ports in WinXP
without installing a 3rd party app?

Your firewall doesn't block this? Your firewall is, to put it blankly, not
much of a firewall. Now, if you're saying that you don't know how to
configure it to block this, then that's one matter, but if your firewall
can't be configured to refuse all incoming data except for those on a few
acceptable ports, then it's useless.

Even little old ICF can be configured to accept or reject packets on certain
ports.

Alun.
