pop-ups loading without browser open (not messenger service)

I will be working without the IE browser window open and
will still get pop-ups coming through. Just got one, but
IE is of course running to do this. I've changed the
Messenger Service mode to off and no longer get
those "Windows" text box messages. These are the same
pop-ups we all get while on the net. I'm using a cable
modem and wonder if maybe it's on their end.

It could depend on wether you have other applications open
that allow pop-ups, for instance Kazaa and other p2p
clients usually have such allowances.
It is fully possible that you have something installed on
your computer that allows this:
almost a virus, Gator, and all of its sub-programs work
like this: they install on your machine because it is
craved on a specific website and you click the agree-
button, next they start giving you pop-ups, usually based
upon your cookies, to make the comercial be fitted to what
you usually surf to.

There are other programes that work like Gator aswell, I
have encountered something called "save now" but Im not
sure if it is a stand alone or if it is part of Gator.

How to get rid of Gator: well, search (under start menue)
for Gator, the remove all files you find in that one that
you dont recognize as something vital and/or something you
created yourself.
Gator can reinstall itself on your computor even if there
is only one single file left f it on the PC.

Hope this helps somewhat in the search for what it can be.

Sometimes ISP's install popup software on your system
(earthlink has been known to do this). run the syware
programs lised above, and then run a good registry
cleaner, and this "problem" should go away.
