I have done a network diagnostics check and it came up with failed on pinging
pop.tiscali.co.uk inbound mail server. but i can send and receive e-mails
thru outlook express with no problems.
can anyone help

why have i got a failed against my incoming mail on a diagnostic check?

You may find that pop.tiscali.co.uk doesn't accept pings - www.microsoft.com
doesn't either - many places do this to restrict network traffic.
