POP Forwarding Question

I have my Gmail configured to forward all incoming mail to my Outlook 2003 at
home and at the office. While leaving both Outlooks open and having it
send/receive every minute, I noticed that only some messages were getting to
my Outlook at home and others were going to my Outlook at the office. I tried
to fix this by closing Outlook when I left the office and opening Outlook
when I got home. This forwarded the mail to my Outlook at home just fine, but
when I leave home and close Outlook and then open it at work, it does not
forward the emails that were just forwarded to my home address. I hope this
isn't too confusing. I'll try make my point simpler:

Let's say George emailed me. I open Outlook at home and it forwards it just
fine. I have not checked George's email in my Gmail account yet, so it should
still be an unread message. I close my Outlook at home. I open my Outlook at
work, but George's email is not forwarded to me. Is this a problem with Gmail
or with Outlook? I'd like to be able to see the same emails from work and
home through Outlook without having to import/export.
 
set outlook to leave mail on the server so that both programs can down load
it.
 
Thanks that answered the question, but it raises another one. Now if I'm
leaving the mail on the server, does that mean every time it checks Gmail it
will forward the unread mail to Outlook even if it has already been
forwarded? I have my send/receive settings at every minute, so would this
forward the same email to my Outlook multiple times?

Every minute is much too often -it creates extra server load and if there is
a large message (or a lot of messages) that takes longer than a minute to
download, it can cause outlook to hang.

if gmail is forwarding to your isp account, it will only forward each
message once. if you have rules in outlook forwarding messages to another
account, set the rule to run only on one machine or it will forward each
message twice.

I think we are mixing up terminology :) You are forwarding to one email
address, correct?

If you are forwarding it to your isp mailbox and you are using both the home
outlook and work outlook to collect it, as long as it's left on the server,
both outlooks will get a copy. It's not being "forwarded" to both - just
forwarded to one address and the mailbox is downloaded by both. Because the
information about what was downloaded is stored in the pst, it's unique to
each outlook - they won't know what the other copy downloaded so you'll get
copies of everything in both computers.

You will need to either use the delete after xx days option or occasionally
set one to delete from server - unless you have an unlimited mailbox on the
server.

Why are you doing that? Outlook can access gmail with no forwarding needed.
While leaving both Outlooks open and
having it send/receive every minute,

Way too short for the send/receive interval. The recommended minimum is ten
minutes.
I noticed that only some

You must set Outlook's option to leave messages on the server so that one
Outlook doesn't remove the messages from the POP server before the other has
a chance to see them.
 
Okay sorry! I think I was using the wrong terminology. I only have one Gmail
account and I would like both my Home and Office Outlook to download the
messages. Before when I left both Outlooks on, it would only forward some to
my Home and some to my Office, so now I assume that by checking "leave on
server" it will download to both Outlooks. So what I do NOT want is for one
of my Outlooks to download the same email twice. For example, if I have
"leave on server" checked and it downloads an email from George to my Home
Outlook, the next time it does a send/receive, will it know not to download
the same email again? If so, will it still recognize that my Office Outlook
has not downloaded George's email and then download it? Thanks for all your

So what I do NOT want is for one
of my Outlooks to download the same email twice. For example, if I have

Correct. Unless there is a problem with the connection, it will mark the
mail as downloaded. the setting is stored locally, so the other machine sees
all the name that is new to it. Note that one cause of connection problems
and duplicate email is checking mail too frequently - if outlook begins a
new check before it's finished with one, it may not update it's file with
what was downloaded and download some or all a second time. Don't go lower
than 8 - 10 min.

If so, will it still recognize that my Office Outlook
has not downloaded George's email and then download it? Thanks for all
