Poor photo print quality in Windows, but OK when print from Office

Hi,
More often than not when I print from XP the quality is very poor; however
there are occasions when it is fine.
I’ve found a work around, which is to insert the picture into Word and print
the doc.
Does anyone have any idea why printing from XP is a problem, better still
does anyone have fix?
I’ve tried:
New Carts
Different printers, Dell, 2 x Epson
Up to date drivers from manufacturer’s www.

BTW: The computer is a Dell.

Exactly what method are you using for printing from XP?

I have the same problem with all applications, other than Office.
eg. Windows print wizard.
