poltergeist?

Hi

One of my PCs has suddenly started turning itself back on after I've closed
down.

And i do mean closed down, not hibernated. I click on Start, Turn off
computer, Turn Off - and it turns off.

It then stays off for varying times, but as soon as I turn around, it's back
again!

I haven't changed anything in the power settings

Where should I start looking?

I have now turned off at the mains - and it's stayed off, so I think I have
now ruled out poltergeists!!!

I have three PCs in a network - two hardwired and one wireless. All have Win
XP. It's the second hardwired one that has started doing this. They are all
behind a router and all have up to the minute MS updates, virus and spyware
protection.

Thanks

You might want to start looking in the Bios settings to see what is enabling
startup.

Check the BIOS settings - nothing to do with the OS. An operating system is
not going to turn your PC back on if you actually turned it off. However -
there are various settings (from auto-power to what to do if the system
loses power) that could give the effect you are seeing.

Network card with "wake-up" setting?

OK, where do I look for that possibility?

BIOS..
Just like the other power settings (that would have to be unrelated to your
OS) for your system.

During boot up you should se "Press del to enter setup" or something like
that.

Key may be del, F3 or something completely different, depends on the BIOS .

I had a Compaq that does exactly what you describe and never did manage to
stop it, but that one actually had a hardware power switch on the back of
the PSU.so once it shut down if we wanted it off we used the rear switch :)

If you have the kind of compaq I think you have, it can be cured by
replacing the power supply.
