Png picture in Fireworks won't import

Guest

I made a png graphic in Fireworks, complete with pull-down menu options, and I can't import or copy/paste it into my web. When I pasted it, only the background picture was pasted, without the hot-spots

Thanks

For the web, just use jpgs for photos and gifs for the others. And you don't
want those big png files in your site, You probably need to work with the
html that Fireworks generates, not the png original file. Read their HELP
files on how to export the 'right stuff'.

portable network graphic files aren't supported in all browsers.

Did you export the graphic from Fireworks? Fireworks should generate an
image (or images) as .jpg or .gif files as well as an html page. The html
document contains the actual code for assembling the graphic with all the
hotspots and code/etc.. Always use jpg or gif when exporting from Fireworks
as png is not widely supported yet.

Hope this helps,

There's some misinformation posted above that needs to be corrected.

1) Big png files: 1st off there are two types of png files. 256 color
Paletted png files are always smaller than a gif. True Color lossless png's
are also in some cases smaller too if there are only a few colors in them.
They should be avoided for photos because they can't be compressed but are a
very wise and economical choice for anthying you would normally use a gif
for.

2) Not supported by a lot of browsers: Actually most browsers do support
them. As a matter of fact it's IE that is the real problem. Current
versions of Safari, Netscape, Opera, and IE's last Mac version (Figure that
one out) not only support png they also support it's alpha channels. IE
while it does support png is the only biggie that does not support the alpha
channel of png. I also just tested a png in the following browsers and have
comfirmed support:

AOL 7
IE 2
IE 5.1
IE 5.5
IE 6.0
Fire Fox .8
Mosaic .9
Netscape 1
Netscape 4.8
Netscape 6.2
Netscape 7
Opera 6
Opera 7
Safari 1

Now while I'm not sure what constitutes universal support I'd have to say
this list shows it's widely supported.

In answer to Crash's question:

"I thought they were gonna be the new standard years ago...wha happened?"

I'd have to say, Mocrosft not supporting the alpha channel, misinformation
about lack of support and the fact the mng format (animated png) never took
a good foothold.

Since the vast majority of browsers out there are IE, I would have to say
that the statement that PNG files are not supported by many browsers (or
shall we say by the majority of browsers), is still true.

Well to be honest.. I really tried (really I did) to switch from gifs to pngs and any other applicable situation. But I got so many complaints from users that they couldnt see the images that I gave up trying . I figured they'd (the png people) would fix the problem someday. So every now and then I sneak one in there to see if I get any complaints. I also had some problems with their quality, and I admit that maybe I wasn't creating them 100% correctly (since I don't use them regularly).... I guess time will tell....but to me it sure doesn't look like they are catching on.
