Plug webdesigner on pages?

I just finished my first official website and I'm wondering if I should
include my company name on the page(s) with a link to my site. Can I get
some feedback on if you plug your company and if so, if you plug it on the
homepage only or every page? Also, do you usually get resistance from your
clients if you do so?

Thanks!
Beverly

I think it depends entirely on the client. Some are happy to do this.
Others want no commercial message at all.

As a general rule, I only include my info on the copyright page for the design and coding and in the
meta tags.

Thomas,

Would you be kind enough to provide a link to one of your websites so that I
can see how you did this?

Thanks!
Beverly

I don't put a "visible" link on any website I do.

But then one of my pet peeves is automobile dealers placing their emblem on the back of my
brand new car.!!
Actually the last one I bought, I made them take it off.

Hi,
Presumably you're a freelance designer? If so you want to get your company
name on every page for 2 reasons
1/ A potential client might see it and contact you
2/ A link to your site is going to help your google PR

If you're worried about client resistance put your company name in the
footer of the page, in a colour that users (and your client) won't even
notice but the search engines will pick up.

Beverly,

(do a view source on any page and look for the Author tag in the head section)

(I actually set the page to not be indexed or followed by the search engines)

Actually, most search engine algorithms are sophisticated enough to pick a
hidden link up and consider it a subversive tactic and may penalize the site
for it--not a good idea.

Beverly,

It's not the end of the world if a client does not want to plug the
designer... you're still getting paid and there will be other clients who
will allow it. I would not do anything to a client's site without their
approval or permission. It's best to spell out the specs beforehand to avoid
misunderstandings.

Also, I never hesitate to put one of those sites in MY portfolio, regardless
of whether my branding appears on the site. Both of these issues are
covered in my stock contract....

Jon,

Google even warns on their site that your site may be dropped suddenly by
using certain tactics such as cloaking and hidden text links if detected in
their ever changing algorithms. Read up on B3, bullet 4:
http://www.google.com/webmasters/2.html#B3

These tactics known in SEO circles as 'black hat seo' can get any site
penalized or banned if detected. You may get away with them for a while, but
your clients may not think they are worth the risk.

Murray,
do you remember a "contract maker" app that was circulating a while back? I
remember seeing it once then never again.
It was like a contract generation program a lawyer would use, but it was all
geared towards web dev.

If anyone remembers, jump in. ;-)

I don't do client work - I build sites for myself which are dependant on SEO
and PPC. My tactics are based on personal experience rather than whats known
in "seo circles" - not going to give the game away by saying any more than
that.

Kudos, Jon. I understand what you are saying!!!

Maybe someone will remember it. It looked like a nice tool that could have
been used in a number of different ways.

btw; mine was written by Matlock. Lol
