plug-in wont download

I am trying to do research and need a certain plugin (AlternaTIFF) to open up
documents. Every time I click the install button for the plugin, which is on
the website I am researching, a window pops up and says "Microsoft Internet
Explorer has experienced a problem and will shut down". The only option I
have is to click okay and Explorer shuts down. It offers the option to send
the problem to Microsoft, which I have done. I also have been getting a
window that pops onscreen and says this program has performed an illegal
operation and will be shut down. It is called webrebateso. This happens on
or offline.

You don't mention what version of Windows or IE you are using, thus, I can
only suggest.that you try the following and see if it helps:
