I have an AT&T Yahoo! wireless set up. I can get to the Internet. I have
set my POP and SMTP servers to the port numbers and secure connection
settings in Outlook as instructed by AT&T Yahoo. However, I cannot get my
e-mail to send or receive in Outlook. A tech told me to set up the Windows
Mail to correct the problem but that just caused more problems because now my
e-mail downloads from the server to Windows mail. Can someone please tell me
how to 1) disable Windows mail and 2) find the patch I need for Vista to work
with my AT&T Yahoo! e-mail account?

There is no patch needed. If you need help with Outlook, it is better to ask in
the Outlook newsgroup where the Outlook experts hang out:
microsoft.public.outlook.general

As to silencing Windows Mail, you can change the defaults back to Outlook.
Open the Default Programs applet, which you can access either from
the Start menu or via the Control Panel, then click the first item:
"Set your default programs."
After a few seconds, a list of programs comes up. Click on "Microsoft
Outlook". If it doesn't respond with "This program has all its defaults"
then fix it by clicking on the option indicated by the first green arrow.

Do you even have Outlook installed? Vista comes without it. It's available
in some,
but not all, of the extra cost Microsoft Office packages, though.

If you can start Outlook, it will take over as the default email program,
but
not disable Windows Mail.

For any other problems with Outlook, you're likely to get faster answers
in newsgroups meant for Outlook, such as:

microsoft.public.outlook.general
microsoft.public.outlook.installation

Mention which version of Outlook you have, and that you're running it
under Vista, in case this makes a difference in your answers.

Thanks Gary! I finally got my Outlook straightened out.....I forgot to use
my upgrade disk to go from 2002 to 2003.....and once I did that, the settings
worked.

I appreciate your quick response.....I was really worried about the Windows
mail thing.

Is there a way to export my e-mails that downloaded to Windows Mail to
Outlook without having to try to quickly forward them and then close out of
Windows Mail?

You're welcome.
As for exporting mail from WM to Outlook, we do frequently have
experts in that procedure post here, so I will defer to them.

Since you have both Outlook 2003 and Windows Mail setup and functional,
transferring email from WM to Outlook should be as simple as going to
'File|Export|Messages' and selecting "Microsoft Outlook (or Microsoft
Exchange)". Exporting the messages with Windows Mail will preserve the Sent
dates; using the Import function in Outlook will move the messages but
replace Sent dates with the date of the transfer. If you've created any
Contacts in Windows Mail, use the 'File|Import and Export' function within
Outlook to move these; oddly Outlook does a better job of transferring
contacts than does WM, just the opposite of the email transfer.
