Pls, HELP !!! Access 97 installation failure

Hi,

I have done dozens of Access 97 (retail) installations, all of them
successful but the last one.

I have a new PC, with Windows XP SP2 and 2GB memory.

When I install Office 97 from original CD (before any Service Packs),
everything goes fine until the final process that I receive following
error:

"WorkGroup Administrator: error to change workgroup database"

I click on "Accept" and I receive another error message:

"Installation program could not create file SYSTEM.MDW. After
installation is complete, reboot and execute Workgroup Administrator
before to execute this application. (-1011)"

This is the first time I see this error, maybe 2GB memory PC can be
the reason?

I would appreciate your comments about.

Angel.

System.mdw usualy resides in the Windows folder. Are there any special
or different permissions on this computer?

System.mdw usualy resides in the Windows folder. Are there any special

I check by copying a file and it was fine. How can I check the
permissions?

Thanks.

You can right-click on the Windows\System32 folder (I was wrong in
orignal post, it's usually here) and choose Sharing and Security. The
security part is usually only there on NTFS drives. In here (if you
have Admin rights) you can view and set the permissions on the folder
by user and group. Do not try and attempt this if you've never done it
before. Find someone with experience to check the settings and see if
this is the problem.

Storrboy,

I am the only user and I have Admin rights, I don't understand the
problem.

Trying to solve the issue I did several workarounds and it seems that
I got the problem solved (I don't know if anything will arise in a
near future, but by now I think it is ok). I did following:

.. Days before, I installed Virtual PC 2004 and I did an Office 97
installation on a virtual disk. Everything was fine, as usual.
.. I copied the SYSTEM.MDW from virtual disk to normal hard drive (the
one is missing).
.. I installed the Service Pack 1, 2b and Jet35sp3
.. I tested an application and everything goes right.

So, I hope things go right from now on, I will test more applications
in order to check.

I have to install now Office 2003 (in different folder) and I will
make several disk images in order to have good backups in case I had
to recovery.

Thank you very much for your responses.
