Pls give me your opinion on new desktop

I have to purchase a new desktop. I would like to have it advanced as
I keep it for long time.
I use the computer for common domestic works, no games, neither media
use.
Some occasional software programming (from my old hobby !) Small
business activity ..
And I have several doubts:
1) 32 or 64 bit OS .. I love XP Pro and fear Win 7
2) HD disk drives when SATA is choosed.
3) Don't want to loose software I normally run because the 64 bit
versions are not available, so for drivers of external addons.

On the other side I would like to have more RAM .. and more CPU speed
...
It's a puzzle !
Comments and opinions are very much appreciated.

What is the specification of computer that you use now?
What do you find slow with your computer?
What is your budget for a new PC?

P4 at 2.4 GHz 1GB ram XP Pro SP3
Computer slows down as soon as I have more tasks on.
Budget is not a problem as much as I get the right value out of what
I pay!
According to what I have understood is not easy to get a real
improvement remaining anchored to XP 32bit, and, on the other side, I
don't want to spend in new 64 bit software more then for the new
hardware.

64bit software shouldn't cost you any more than 32bit, and most 32bit
software will run quite happily on a 64bit os. If you go for 64 bit then the
os won't constrain you to 4GB RAM. Plus if you go for Windows 7 then you can
download an XP emulator from Microsoft - its free, but it might require more
than the basic version of Winodws 7 (not sure).
