Never using 98SE for years have I had a burn under-run, e.g. couldn't feed
data to cd fast enough. PIII at 733Mz, 512 ram at 133Mz fsb and 20+ gigs
free hd space on a 7200 WD drive. Plextor 8/4/32 is burner in qustion, e.g.
8X max.
First time I go to just copy a cd (using temp image just in case source is
bad), Nero made it about 30% into burn when encountered under-run error
using XP. Burner's definitely supported.
Reboot into 98SE and do same with no problems. Exactly as experience has
taught me after couple of years of never having an under-run problem under
98SE using at least 10 different burning programs, e.g. Easy, Nero, Alcohol,
CDRWIN, CloneCD, Plextor's provided tools and various "make vcd out of
images" etc. software..
Maybe it's just me, but after couple of weeks running XP Pro, the ONLY thing
that it seems to offer as a plus is MSN Messenger 6.x's ability to use any
type of video in device. Under 98SE they limit the input and I can't use my
Radeon's video-in. Obviously, not an OS problem but instead MS encouraging
me to stay with XP.
On the negative side there seems to be lots of issues.
#1 is games run noticably slower, usually at least one step in res lower
required. Same drivers (latest Cat 4.3) under both OS's, even using "start
/high" trick doesn't make up for the diff. .
#2 The system overall seems "sluggish", I'd routinely keep a dl going while
playing games or burning a cd with no problems, e.g. dl would be ok and burn
successfull or game speed acceptable. Forget doing that under XP.
#3 Crashing to a reboot (true it's only happened twice in 2 weeks and not
for over a week) instead of a blue screen isn't a solution, e.g. it still
can crash.
I'm finding myself wondering if I just shouldn't reboot using a 98SE floppy
and do the "sys c:" business, reboot into 98SE and start deleting.
I suspect if I knew exasctly what every service did and assuming they're not
so inter-ralated you can, I'd kill just about everything running that I can
but what's the point. It'd just be guessing. I'm just sitting here shaking
my head.
Anyway, I'm killing everything in OE after this post so not to get confused
under which OS things are.
I suspect I've given XP it's turn to try and shine and all I've seen is a
dll glow. Next turn at the bat might as well try a Linux distrib, can't be
any more hassle. Xp's multi-tasking seems to be "one user task" and
"whatever MS decides it wants to".
Anyone know if MS will refund money for XP Pro if you decide it's not your
cup of tee, e.g. return everything with receipt and be re-imbursed?
