"please select the operating system to start" ??

Got a new PC with Windows XP Home Ed preinstalled. I formatted the HDD using
the XP cd and created a 2nd partition (D:). I installed XP on C:

Now during start up, I am asked:

"Please select the operating system to start:
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition"

The first option loads windows properly.

The 2nd option produces the following error: "Windows could not start
because the following file is mising or corrupt: <Windows
root>\system32\hal.dll. Please re-install a copy of the above file."

Would appreciate any help on preventing this illogical "request" at start up
is appreciated. Thanks.

You are saying that you have TWO copies of Home installed on one computer.
One that works and one that gives you the error message and tells you the
file that is giving you a problem. Have you gone into the good instillation
of Windows and copied the hal.dll file and pasted that one into the 2nd
Windows\system32 folder to see if that will correct the problem. And why two
copies of the same OS on the same HD?
