Hi

My laptop crashed recently and I was unable to get into
Windows xp. I was advised to do a patch repair of winxp.
The problem is that the laptop stops on the first screen.
On switching on all tha appears is this

American mega trends Released 10/30/2001
AMIBIOS ( c ) 2000 American Megatrends Inc
BIOS VER 2.06

MS570 KBC Version: 1.16
Intel Celeron T , 1 Ghz
Checking NVRAM
253952KB OK
ICS9248-146 Inside
WAIT . . .
_

The cursor just continues flashing at this point and I
cannot go further - Ctrl, Alt, Del simply restarts the
same process again and F8 and Esc do nothing

Please help!! I have lots of valuable information

It would appear that you have a more fundamental problem on your PC

If it were simply the Hard Disk that has an error, then you would get a message 'cannot find system disk' or somtheing to that effect

Can you access BIOS. Not stating in your post the make, model etc. makes it difficult for others to assist

If so then maybe you can get some way along to reconfiguring the Laptop and getting it to boot up to CD ROM for a Windows Reinstall

If you find that the Laptop isn't going to play ball; consider that your most valuable component of the Laptop is YOUR data on the Hard Disk..then you should get assistance if you are not experienced or competent to do this step.. Remove the Hard Disk Drive and connect it into a Desktop PC, Tandy and other electronic shops have Laptop IDE to PC IDE connector cables / plugs

Backup all your data to Hard Drive and then Burn onto CD

Send the Laptop off to be fixed or buried as required. I suggest the latter because a new Toshiba 2.4Mhz Celeron with 30Gb HDD, 256 Mb Memory, DVD, Ethernet, Wireless Access, Modem etc. cost less than US$ 1,000 today!
