Please HELP!!

I have just finished editing my home movie and when I attempt to save the
movie file as DV-AVI it sais estimated space required 35598.75MB. Does this
equate to nearly 36 GB's. I was advised to save it as DV-AVI for the best
quality. What should i do now. I have not yet saved it. This file if i am
correct in my calculations would be about 8 DVD's. Oh Sxxt!! What should I
do now.

Thanks in anticipation of your response.

DV-AVI is about 13 GB per hour... so if your movie is almost 3 hours, then
the figures are right.

But the DV-AVI file doesn't go to the DVD.... your DVD software uses it as
an input file and makes the needed MPEG-2 files for the disc.... if you use
really high compression settings for the MPEG-2 file, it might fit.

Hi PapaJohn,

Thankyou very much for your quick reply, much appreciated. I am using Sonic
MyDVD software. When i am about to burn to DVD there is no option to change
compression settings only to click on the BURN button!

What should I do?

Thanks again,
Si

PS So its ok to save the file as DV-AVI to my computer then?

So if i use the deluxe edition should I choose the extended play option?
will this make a big difference in the quality? I captured the vid from
anologue camcorder tapes to my pc.

Thanks,

Si

I limit my DVDs to about an hour.... from reading, I understand that a 2
hour video on one would only show little loss of quality, but beyond that it
would go downhill noticeably...

As it depends a lot on your content, you would need to test and assess it
for your needs.

I will take your advise and teat and assess. If it really is bad quality is
there any way in which I can split the file and save it to two dvd's?

Thanks again for your quick response.

If i split the movie, then save it. Will i still be able to attempt to burn
it as one file with sonic.
I am having a real problem at the mo as I have made numerous attmepts to
save the file and it keeps failing. If I split it will this help. How do
you split it to make two projects??

Thanks

Si

no, if you split the movie, it'll be two files for your DVD software.... but
you can easily put two big clips together into one file using Movie Maker to
render it again from the two big clips...

splitting a project helps if it's too complex to render with your current
memory and settings.

my newsletter #8 was about splitting complex projects... it's online, with a
link on the bottom of the Problem Solving > Can't Save a Movie page of my
website.

I have continued to attempt to save the movie file to my pc and each time it
fails at a different percentage. It has failed fromr 6% up to 55%. The
error message is 'windows has encountered a problem and will have to shut
down.....' Due to it failing at different points is it worth me continuing
at attempt to save the whole file in a hope that it will reach 100%. This
movie has taken me three months to complete and I am very eager to back it
up!! Splitting the project is something I have never done and if there is an
easier safer way than i would prefer that.

I read somewhere on your site that one of your complex movies was making MM
take a few seconds to respond. My movie file has been taking MM nearly 1
minute to respond to every click!!! Very time consuming. The file is approx
2hrs 40mins long with vid, photos, mp3's, transitions and overlays.

Thanks,

Si

Thanks PapaJohn,
Yes I read your article I just wondered what you thought about the following
part of the last message I sent before I undertake splitting. Also could the
mp3's be playing a part in the problem I have in saving?

Check your memory and virtual memory usage.... if you increase your virtual
memory, and run into the raised limit during the rendering, then you're into
having to break the project down into parts.

If you don't reach the memory limit, then something like the MP3 files
should be swapped out with WMAs or WAVs....

Thanks PapaJohn,
What is the best way to convert the mp3's to WMA's. If i convert the mp3'
from the My Music folder I have them in will they automatically change in the
timeline. I dont want to have to redo all the music files again as they are
trimmed to fit the vid clips.

Does this mean that all I have done trimming and postioning my audio tracks
needs to be done again.

Just to clarify. I have to start again with all the audio files I have used
in the Movie put them all on the timeline of a new project and save the movie
to my computer. This will then convert them all to WMA. ?I will then have to
re trim and postion.

Thanks PapaJohn for you continued help in this matter. It is much
appreciated.

No, that would be your last resort....

First you need to be sure the project needs splitting due to your memory
limits... if it's a memory issue than splitting doesn't involve replacing
source files.

But if it's not a memory issue and you need to get into your source files...
try stripping your project of all files but the audio/music ones... save it
to a movie and, being audio/music only, it'll save it to a WMA file.... if
that renders and plays fine, it can be your new source file in WMV format
without having to convert each file and doing re-editing.
