Hi

I have some problems with my xp installation foe example start up taking
longer and shutdown sometimes not even working 1st time plus little error
messages nothing I cant live with but a pain none the less

I have zone alarm on my pc and I know from shutting it down prior to
shutting down pc speeds up shutdown and taking ZA of start up list speeds
that up to but I still want to try and fix other niggles with my xp
installation

I have two hard drives installed 1 250Gb patitioned into C D and E and 1
80Gb (from my old machine which I have reformatted so no OS on it) named G

My plan is to back up whole of C drive with OS and everything onto G just in
then then run repair windows from CD on C drive to try and solve issues

Am I right in thinking that running repair will just repair windows problems
without losing all my settings data etc etc?

If this works I then plan to back up new C drive over to G as a permanent
"good" system backup

Does this seem a sensible plan or am I looking at it the wrong way?

Please ask anything you need to help me with my situation/plan

Thanks to anyone who can help:)

Regards

Craig

there are a number of
aspects for your particular
pc and configuration that
require to be scrutinized.

however, it may be possible
to simply resolve them with
the following:

i would be sure to disable any
third party firewalls and antivirals
and ensure you have a fair reserve
of virtual memory, e.g. min of 2 megs
and max of 1152 megs.

How do you plan on doing this "backup"? Using what program? What you really
need is a drive imaging program to image the one drive to the other.
Programs that do this are Acronis True Image Home version 10 and Norton
Ghost. In general it's best to keep backups including images on an external
drive to guard against some sort of problem affecting the whole system
including both internal drives.

Yes a repair install should preserve data and programs. You are wise,
though, to image the system before hand. Things seem to go wrong at the
worst of times which is when you are not prepared for it. You will have to
revisit the windows update site to get all the updates.

There is no guarantee a repair install will help with all of the problems,
especially if the issues are caused by 3rd party software. Here is a link
for how to do a repair install.
