please help with system choice

O

Os

I'm writing to get some advice on the system I've chosen after a long and
stressfull session of picking hardware.

the following:

AMD (Newcastle) Athlon 64bit 3000+ 754pin/512 L2cache

Asus K8V-SE Deluxe S754 VIA k8t800

Crucial 512 DDR400 PC3200

Antec Sonata Midi Tower Trupower 380W PSU

Sapphire Atlantis Radeon 9800 PRO 128 MB DDR

Nec Double ND-2510 Layer 8x DVD Dual R/rw

Logitech MX700 Cordless USB Desktop (Keyboard and Mouse)

Iiyama Prolite E430 17in TFT

I'll be mostly using the machine for internet, office apps and would like
to play the latest games.

I've chosen a 64bit AMD over the cheaper 32bit route because I figure I
don't update my PC often and would like something which will last me as
long as possible.

The monitor has no DVI output, a loss, but my budget doesn't stretch the
extra £50 for the model up.

The motherboard I've chosen is the part I'm least confident about, my
knowledge isn't great at the finer details of motherboards.

The rest of the parts, IDE Harddrive and disk drive, I'll scavenge from my
previous PC)

Anyway, my question is, have I picked right, and are they any
incompatibility issues with the hardware chosen.

Thanks you.

I'd find a way to budget in 1GB of memory, not just 512MB.

Often with the more popular Asus boards you may find someone
making it their pet-project to obsess over every possible
aspect of the board... you might find a lot of detail on
that board and other alternatives @ http://forums.amdmb.com

If buying "now", the Radeon video card is a fair choice, but
a few weeks to months from now (letting prices settle a bit)
an nVidia 6800 will be better bang for the buck.

Arggh, forgot to note that x2 on the list. 1GB is what I budgeted for.

Thanks for that I'll have a look around.

Kony, I don't think I can wait much longer! Its taken me an age to decide
on the above as it is. Will the 6800 be *that* much of an improvent?

Then don't wait... whichever you choose, in 18 months it'll
look slow again. ;-)

yes the 6800 is a significant improvement, but it also
depends on what you're playing, you can google some
benchmarks for those games.
