Hi,
My laptop came with 15GB.Windows XP Home and some software.

Remaining 10 GB to D drive.
My problem is that C drive has only 400 MB free space left.
how hard I try to remove the software on my disk, I am still left with this 400 MB.
how to find and remove the unnecessary files which are hidden on my disk and occupying the space

In my computer, right click your c drive, choose properties then disk cleanup. tick all but compress old files then click on the more options tab, at the bottom is system restore click on the cleanup tab and you should cleanup some space.
Next, right click on My Computer and then properties, then goto the system restore tab, highlight your (c:) drive and move the slider down to what you think is a reasonable amount of space.
Then click on your D drive settings and turn off system restore for this drive and your all done.

check that software documentation for any options like "image", "guard" etc.
and find out what they do. my father uses AV Software that periodically
creates snapshots, which take space, of course.

If you do a Google search for "file space wizard" or "file management" or the
like, you'll find a lot of apps that purport to help you clean up your disk.
Back when hard disks were small and expensive, I had a utility that would
graphically show the size of ALL files on the hard drive. This can give you an
idea of what's there and what you might want to delete or compress.

A quick look on Google turned up three such apps (which I have NOT tried). Two
are free (http://www.win.tue.nl/sequoiaview/)
(http://www.freebyte.com/disktective/) and the other is US$50
(http://www.miclog.com/dm/1/desc1.shtml).

Warning -- only delete files that you KNOW are not needed. When in doubt either
rename a file (and leave it in place) or move it to your D:\ drive. If several
days of use show no ill effects, you can get rid of it more permanently.

Hi Rama,

Go to Start > Run and type cleanmgr.exe
This will bring the clean-up utility, after you accept , choose more
options, and in the bottom half choose 'System restore' this will
erase all your restore points, except the most recent one, so make
sure your computer is working OK!

Good luck
