Greetings Jim,
It really all depends what version of Messenger you want to remove.
If you want to remove Windows Messenger 4.7, you can, but if you do, you will be preventing
Remote Assistance, Whiteboard, and Application Sharing from working. However, if you don't
use this functionality that would be disabled by removing Messenger,
you can simply remove it by closing down Messenger if it's running (right click the messenger
icon in the notification area/system tray and click close). Then click the start button,
then click Run and type in (copy-paste if you like):
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove
Then click OK.
Messenger will then be uninstalled. For more detailed instructions and screenshots, go to,

If you want to remove Windows Messenger 5, again you can, but if you do, you will be
preventing Remote Assistance, Whiteboard, and Application Sharing from working. To do so,
click Start, then Run, and type the following:
msiexec /x {1F0BD960-6525-4FEE-B577-2473F77F1277}
then click OK.
If you want to remove MSN Messenger, simply click Start, then Control Panel, then Add or
Remove Programs, then click MSN Messenger and then click the Remove button.
