Call Dell anyway, and get your butt down
to a local repair center. Also, it may be
possible to remove the drive and slave
it to a working system. And, go to a
local shop and invest in some kind of
backup like an external USB drive that
you can haul to school, and do your
assignments there. Maybe find a campus
tech, to see if he has one, and can
get your files for you. Stop by your
ITS people, and ask where he is. This
is a nightmare that I'm going to start
facing more and more, as this student
laptop thing grows. I really dread it.
You guys should be working on school
computers, and using backups .. and
just have the laptops for nights and week
ends. Nonsense to put all that software
and assignments on a laptop. Good
luck.

My cousin had an HP laptop that her battery was about dead
(for good). It wouldn't stay charged except for about 5 min unplugged,
and when it died, it had to be plugged in for about 5 min before being
powered up, or it wouldn't turn on. Once she replaced the battery, it
worked fine. You might try changng out the battery.

. Try without the battery in laptop. If you have access to DVM measure
output of charger. If not, take it to local TV/computer repair centre and
they can check it for you.

The Dell ac adaptors don't last more than 18 months. That is the most
likely reason.
Do the green lights flash when you plug the adaptor into the dc jack of
your Inspiron 5150?
If so, you could try this: plug the adaptor into the computer's dc jack
and then plug and unplug the power cord of the adapter from the ac wall
outlet couple of times. That has known to work (for a while). The best
place to find a replacement ac adapter is ebay.com. Expect to pay
around $25-$40 plus shipping.
If the ac adaptor is working, then the next possibility is the dc jack
that is connected to the motherboard. That is far more difficult to
fix. (Dell usually sends a totally new motherboad if under warranty) A
new dc jack cost around $35-$45 from ebay. Access to the motherboard
takes many steps. Do not attempt it unless you know what you are doing.
Excellent instructions how to take 5150 apart can be found
http://docs.us.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins5100/sm/index.htm
The desoldering of the old jack is difficult and I recommend to use of
small cutters to break the old jack to pieces to expose the individual
prongs on the other side of the board. Extreme care should be taken not
to bend the board. That particular board is known to have many bad
soldering points that can break if bent or mishandled.
I hope this helps you.
