I have two computers that i want to network together to transfer files
between. I want to get them from my mother's computer to mine, then delete
her hard drive/reinstall Windows (like a new computer). I have talked to a
couple of techs and searched the web numerous times, but haven't been able to
find a solution that works.

The first person I talked to loaned me a crossover cable and gave me fairly
detailed instructions on how to manually network them, which I recently lost
(it involved Subnet masks and IP addresses i think...something involving
255.255.255.0). That partially solved my problem. I was then able to "see"
either computer from the other's "view workgroup computers" window. However,
I was not able to access either of the computers from the other (does that
make sense?).

That person's next suggestion was to connect the hard drives with a "ribbon
cable" (or something like that) and run a "ghost" program to basically copy
the computer's hard drive. I don't really want to spend the money if there
is a simpler way, and I don't wan't my mom's entire hard drive on my computer.

I undid the changes that they had me make (so we could access the internet
again) and asked a tech at an electronics store (CompUSA if anyone's
interested). He said to just run the Windows XP installation disk and use it
to set up a network. That didn't work at all.

I have been trying to solve this problem for weeks. Any help would be
greatly appreciated.

Tech Specs: Both computers are running Windows XP Home Edition. We have a
broadband cable connection (I don't see how that would help, but it may be
useful in some way).

Thanks,
CM

P.S. - I would like to make sure my File Sharing is activated, but I don't
know how to access it.

Sorry, but I didn't specify what kind of network. I want to set up a wired
network. I don't have a wireless network.

If anyone else has a solution, please tell me. Again, any help will be
greatly appreciated.

Clayton,

Your problem of "seeing" another computer on the network, but not being able to
access it, is one which is quite common here. There are a number of reasons for
this problem, which I attempt to explain.

What Operating System is on your 2 computers? XP Home? XP Pro? Other?
Knowing that is a key in this problem. Knowing the reason for "not able to
access either of the computers from the other" is the next thing to look for.

Please read both of these articles, and any linked articles of interest. It
will be worth your time, I promise.

Hi!:

I understand what r u talking about, so i will help you.

1.-The first step u have to take is plug de cross over cable.
2.- turn on the computers

3.- Go to INICIO->MY NETWORK PLACES->NETWORK CONNECTIONS, AND there rigth
click on Local Area Network and Properties. On general tab, click over TCP/IP
protocol and clik properties button.
4.- On IP address write 10.10.10.10
5.- on Sub net mask you should have 255.0.0.0
6.- clik accept twice

7.- now go to step 3 on the other pc but the IP have to be 10.10.10.11

now you have to share the files.

8.- on the pc's mother go to my pc
9.- right clik on hard disc "C"
10.- Clik on Share and safety
11.- Clik on Share this folder and Accept button
probably you will get a warning message, don´t worry about it, just clik
"YES".
and it's done

12.-go to your PC
13.- search the other pc, and know you can acces the files.

Okay, I've read both of your responses.

"Tandee Sam," since your method was more straightforward, I tried it first.
The problem is, the solution you offered was almost exactly the same that one
of the techs reccomended I try. Likewise, it didn't work.

Chuck, I stated in my post that both comps are running XP Pro. I read the
articles, and now I understand more about networking.

I'm getting kind of desperate here, as my mother's computers' memory keeps
decreasing, and I keep deleting mostly unimportant small files. Norton isn't
detecting any viruses, though.

If anyone has a straightforward or semi-straightforward method of networking
computers and transferring files, please tell me.

Clayton,

Be patient and persistent here, and we can help you thru your problem. Since
you are a bit of a novice, you do need to read a bit more, so you can understand
what we need to help you, or for you to help us to help you. If I was in front
of your computer, it would take me half an hour or so; since you are learning,
it may take a bit longer.

Set the two computers up with the crossover cable, as before. Then run
"browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" on each computer, and post the output
here. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions
precisely:

the above work, you might do well to read:

Clayton,

I'll do my best. But please start by reading:
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/privacy-statement.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/privacy-statement.html

There is absolutely no information in either "browstat status" or "ipconfig
/all" that might help a bad guy access your computer. And all of the
information is useful when we're working on your problem. Including computer
names.

Maybe we're not too far from a solution. Looking at the ipconfig for *omitted*,
I see that it has IPV6 aka Teredo Tunneling. Start by removing that, and if any
problems continue, post updated "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all". Whenever
you make any changes anywhere, always post updated diagnostics. And please
don't munge.
