Was running Windows Home Edition NT Workstation. Fat32 file system.
Somehow (I did it) it changed to the ntfs file system. Running NT
Workstation. I tried to fix this by formatting harddrive and re-installing
XP Home Edition with the *Recovery* disk (the only disk) that came with my
computer. Seems I'm still or again running the NT program. If I'm
misinterpreting this whole thing, Please help clear it up. Is it possible
for me to EVER run the XP Home Edition again??

Thanks .....

Windows XP is really Windows NT 5.1.

NT means New Technology.

XP is a marketing name that means eXPerience. Microsoft probably thought
that Windows XP sounded sexier than Windows NT 5.1.

The NT family

Windows NT 3.1
Windows NT 3.5
Windows NT 3.51
Windows NT 4.0
Windows 2000 (Professional and Server) - NT 5.0
Windows XP - NT 5.1
Windows Server 2003 - NT 5.2

If you click Start, click Run, type: winver and click OK...

You will probably see:
About Windows
In the colored part at the top you may see Microsoft Windows XP Home.
In the gray part below that you may see:
Microsoft ® Windows
Version 5.1
If you click on the End-User License Agreement link, scroll clear to the
bottom, you may see something like:

EULAID:WX.4_HOM_RTL_EN (Windows XP Home Retail English)

EULAID:XPSP1_RM.1_HOM_RTL_EN (Windows XP SP1 Home Retail English)

EULAID:XPSP2_RM.1_HOM_RTL_EN (Windows XP SP2 Home Retail English)

If you open a command prompt...
Start | Run | Type: cmd | Click OK |
In the command prompt type: ver hit your Enter key.

You will probably see:
Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]

Yes, it is possible. First, let's clear up a few things...
1) Are you saying that you were running XP Home NT Workstation? This
OS does not exist. There are either NT Workstation, or Windows XP
Home edition, two OSes. Personally, I would purchase a retail copy of
XP Pro, and install it, since it superceeds NT Workstation.
2) Were you ACTUALLY saying that you were running XP Home as a
dual-boot along with NT Workstation? This is possible. NEVER
install a dual boot with NT Workstation as the LAST OS. Do it the way
Microsoft advises: FIRST install NT Workstation, THEN install XP.
This way, the NT installer will not mess with your XP partition(s).

There is no way to restore your HD to run XP Home Edition EXCLUSIVELY
on FAT32 after they have been converted to NTFS without doing a
COMPLETE repartition and format of your ENTIRE HD, and telling the XP
installer to make the partition(s) FAT32, rather than NTFS. Once you
have converted your Partitions to NTFS, that is the only way to
restore them to FAT32.

So, "bite the bullet", and back up your important data FIRST, then do
the dirty-work.

I personally advise you to take your machine into a qualified service
tech, tell him what you want, and have HIM do it. HE will know what
he is doing (hopefully). It may cost you a little money (maybe
$75-$100), but you WILL have the satisfaction of knowing that it will
be warrantied and properly installed the way you want it. Just make
sure the way you want it is the way Microsoft advises, since Microsoft
won't support non-standard installations.
