Please help! Major Login Problems with Yahoo Plus configured thru

Hello,

I apologize if this question/problem has been posted and for the length of
this post, but I felt I needed to give ALL of the information I have in case
someone can possibly help me. I have been troubleshooting this problem for
almost 30 hours non-stop!

I have used Outlook 2003 (SP2 now) with several POP3 accounts for two years
with no problems. For the past two days, I have been unable to RECEIVE any
mail (I can send) in my Yahoo Plus account. Each time I attempt a
Send/Receive, the “Enter Network Password†box pops up. I enter the correct
password, check the “Save this password in your passwords list†box, and the
same box just continues to pop up, prompting me for the password again and
again with the asterisk inside the password field. I generally re-enter the
password several times and hit “ok†a few times (the box keeps popping up)
and when I give up and hit “Cancel†I get this error message:

“Task ‘[Acct name] Receiving' reported error (0x800CCC92): Your email server
rejected your login. Verify your user name and password in your account
properties. Under tools, click E-mail accounts. The server responded: -ERR
Server not ready. Please try again after sometime’ â€

I can get my email from www.yahoo.com with the same password-- Outlook 2003
just can’t download them. I have 5 other POP3 accounts in Outlook (2 Charter,
3 Comcast) that all seem to be working. I am only having problems with the
Yahoo Plus account.

I also sync my Treo with Outlook using the very same settings in Outlook.
The Treo is sending and receiving email with no problems.

I have tried the following:

*Deleting the registry subkey under
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Protected Storage System Provider in
regedt32 and re-entering the passwords.

*I have run two “Detect and Repair†operations on Outlook.

*I have changed my Yahoo Plus password.

*I have deleted the Yahoo Plus account and re-added it.

*I have created another Outlook profile and re-added the account to it.

* I added my husband’s Yahoo Plus account (with the same settings aside from
login info) to Outlook and was able to send and receive from his account!

* I set up the Yahoo account in question on my OE, but kept getting the same
“Enter Password†prompt and similar behavior to Outlook.

* I have Zone Alarm Pro, Kaspersky AV, Ewido Anti-Malware 3.5, Microsoft
Antispyware and Readnotify ActiveTracker Email plug-in. I disabled all these
apps and tried again-- still the same problem.

* I also opened a command prompt and ran "ipconfig/flushdns".

Does anyone know of anything else I could possibly try?

Much thanks in advance,
Gina

Rich,
I am combing and posting to several forums in search of the answer, plus I'm
in touch with Yahoo. If I find the answer I'll post it here. If you find the
answer please post it here too!

If I don't find the answer, I plan on letting Yahoo go in favor of Gmail,
but what if I have the same Outlook problem with Gmail? :(

Thanks,
Gina

I started having the problem yesterday with OL2003. I was able to clean up
the issue by doing a System Restore to go back a few days - some time before
Norton Internet Security 2006 updates were downloaded. This has happened to
me before, and restoring my system has always fixed it. I have then been
able to go to Live Update, download the updates, and all is well. Haven't
gotten to that step yet, but if that causes a failure, I'll know who to call
for sure!

Hope this helps...

I’m glad you resolved your issue and thank you for posting your solution. :)
Unfortunately, I disabled System Restore when I installed Windows. This is
not the first time I’ve heard of Norton Internet Security or Norton AV being
the culprit…. I wonder if this has anything to do with Yahoo’s use of Norton
AV as well. Regardless, I use Kaspersky AV so my dilemma cannot be caused my
Norton.

Update:
I am also still in touch with Yahoo by email and they had me do the following:

“To help test your account, please perform the following
steps to verify you are able to authenticate (sign in) with the POP
server:

1. Select the Start menu button, then click Run.

2. Type "cmd" or "command" without the quotation marks and press Enter.

3. Type "telnet pop.mail.yahoo.com 110" and press Enter. If you are
successful, you should now see "+OK hello from popgate" against a black
screen. If you do not see this, close the window and start over or
check your internet or network connection.

4. From this screen, type "user xxx" (where xxx is your Yahoo! ID) and
press Enter. You should be prompted with "+OK password required."

5. Type "pass yyy" (where yyy is your case-sensitive password) and
press Enter. If this is successful, you should receive a prompt with
"+OK maildrop ready," followed by mailbox details. If this was not
successful, you will receive "-ERR Error logging in. Please visit
»mail.yahoo.com/".

6. Type "quit" and press Enter to sign off the POP server.

7. Type "exit" and press Enter to return to Windows.

If you were not able to achieve POP authentication during the first try,
wait a few minutes and try again. After several tries, you should be
able to tell if your ID and password will allow you to achieve POP
authentication.

Next, please perform the following test to confirm if you are able to
communicate with the Yahoo! Mail Plus SMTP server:

Select the Start menu, click Run, then type the following command:

telnet://smtp.mail.yahoo.com:25

If the port is not blocked, you should receive a response similar to
"220 smtpxxx.mail.yahoo.com ESMTP" (where "xxx" is the server number you
connected to). If you do not receive this specific response or if you
receive a different response, your ISP, networking equipment, or
security software may be blocking or scanning outgoing mail servers.

NOTE: Please also try port 587 in place of 25. It is pertinent that
you try the alternate port, as some ISPs will block port 25 by default.

Please reply with the results from BOTH tests listed above so that we may
provide further assistance. If possible, please copy and paste the entire
test results for our analysis.â€

Well, I tried the two tests and for the first one received the same error
three times:

"--ERR Server not ready. Please try again after sometime"

The second test I tried using port 25 and port 587 (which is the port I use
for Yahoo POP mail.) It yielded the following message:

"220 smtp110.plus.mail.mud.yahoo.com ESMTP"

I just signed up for a Gmail account and plan on adding that account to my
OL2003. Since I paid for the Yahoo I will keep the account and try whatever
Yahoo support tells me to resolve that issue. I will keep updating this forum
in case anyone else is out there with the same problem.

For a temporary solution to the error pop-ups in Send/Receive, just go into
OL and turn off e-mail reception for the effected POP3 account:

1. In Outlook, on the Tools menu, point to Send/Receive Settings, and then
click Define Send/Receive Groups.
2. Double-click the group that contains the two POP3 accounts, and under
Accounts, click one of the POP3 accounts.
3. Click to clear the Receive mail items check box.

If anyone else has suggestions or comments I’d be most grateful.

Thank you,

Updating my recent post about Norton IS updates causing the OL error message.
After I downloaded updates, all was well for a short time, then the problem
cropped up again. I then disable Norton IS for a few minutes - just long
enough to make the Outlook POP3 connection - and that seemed to fix it, at
least for now. Even with Norton enabled, I am able to send and receive with
no problem. So far, so good - I'll post again if it goes haywire.

Shelley, are you using a router?

I had to leave town for few days on business and used the hotel’s broadband
internet connection with my laptop. Yahoo worked with Outlook! I surmised
that since the only thing different was the internet connection I should
troubleshoot it when I returned home. I did-- first with my wireless router
disconnected and using my cable modem with ethernet-- and Outlook downloaded
my Yahoo messages. So I reset my router and all the settings-- now Outlook is
working with my ISP, router and Yahoo, so all is well there.

So Shelley, if the problem returns please try this if you're using a router.
Thank you to everyone who posted. :)

Gina -
I'm using a Linksys Wireless G router, and hadn't thought of that as an issue.
I haven't had the problem again since my last post, so I figure it had to be
the Norton IS updates temporarily getting in the way as they have in the past.
Good to note, however, that the router is a possibility for future problems!
Thanks,
Shelley
