Please Help!! Field cannot be updated. (Error 3164)

i have a database that has been working for for over a year.

i have a form that is linked to a qry. when the form opens it shows a blank
record. when you type in data in any of the fields you get a msgbox "Field
cannot be updated". on clicking OK this message box appears another 4 times
then the record can be edited as if the message boxes dint appear.

whats more strange is that i have approx 40 different backups of this
database. Saved as i was developing it. All these databases have the same
fault but didnt yesterday.

i dont know whats going on? has this happened to anyone before or can anyone
help??? please.

Try Tools... Compact and Repair; and then if that doesn't work, try
rebuilding the Query upon which the form is based.
