please help. cant defrag

when i try and run defrag i get a message saying mmc.exe encountered a
problem and will shut down.. can any one please tell me how to cure this?

The amount of free space is very important when running Disk
Defragmenter. A
minimum of 15% is required but sometimes 20% is desirable if the drive /
partition
contains one or more large files.

Before running Disk Defragmenter run Disk CleanUp in each active User
Profile to remove Temporary Internet Files. Then run chkdsk. In Windows
Explorer right click on the drive
and select Properties, Tools, Error Checker. Finally try Disk
Defragmenter again in Safe Mode.

Gerry, thanks for the tips. unfortunately, the error with mmc.exe is
stopping defrag from running even after what you suggested. the program opens
and then i get the mmc error message and defrag closes down.
i can however use it in safe mode, so i guess i have to settle for that,
unless theres anyway to repair or replace mmc? i tried "scannnow" or
something that i saw suggested somewhere on here but it didnt help.

If you can run it in Safe Mode then there is another programme running
in Normal Mode, which is interfering. Are you trying to run another
application at the same time?

When you get the mmc error is there any Error Report in Event Viewer?

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the
error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button
resembling two
pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now start your
message
(email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This will paste the
info from the
Event Viewer Error Report complete with links into the message. Make
sure this is
the first paste after exiting from Event Viewer.

Historically anti-virus programmes have interfered. Make sure you are
offline and then temporarily disable the anti-virus and that may allow
Disk Defragmenter to run in normal mode. Screensavers can also
interfere.

version of xp (lived over there but still struggling with the language. im
guessing you dont speak it, but are maybe familiar with the type of messages,

not sure if you can do anything with this, but i appreciate the help. just
had a thougt, i had some spyware problems and i recently updated spybot,
adaware and installed microsoft antispyware. im not sure if ive done
something in one of these thats messed up the mmc.exe but a rollback doesnt
cure it. and it still doesnt work with antivirus etc switched off.
is there anyway of reinstalling mmc???

The problem seems to relate to the Microsoft Management Console and not
necessarily Disk Defragmenter.

In normal mode what steps are you taking to start Disk Defragmenter?

You can run Disk Defragmenter without using the Microsoft Management
Console.

gerry, ive tried from both start, accessories, system tools, disk defrag.
and also from my computer, right clicking the drive, then properties, tools,
defrag. the defrag program opens but then i get the error and when i click
ok the program closes down.
looks like im stuck doing it in safe mode eh?
is there no way of reinstalling mmc.exe?

Try Start, Run, type "sfc /scannow" without quotes and hit Enter.

Another option but I am not sure I would do it if the only do it if the
only problem is the inconvenience of having to run Disk Defragmenter in
safe mode! It could lead to a lot of hassle.

thanks for all the help gerry. i dont think ill gamble with a complete
reinstall. its a pre-installed version anyway so i dont have cd.

i guess ill just do it in safe mode when i need to. i havent found it
affecting anything else so ill just live with it.
