"The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( McAfeeFramework ) cannot be
found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or
message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be
able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and
Support for details. The following information is part of the event: Service
started."

This message appears in the event log every time I log on. If the service
is starting ok and, as far as I can tell, is doing its job, why do I keep
getting this cryptic message? What exactly does it mean.

Cheers,

Entries like that do not harm. They may or may not disappear when you
restrict the remote access to the event viewer. Create a system restore
point and follow the instructions as described in this MSKB article
which applies to WinXP as well:

What exactly does it mean.

Why don't you ask the McAfee tech support.

I find people here tend to know most things I need to know, but I'll give
the Mcafee people a go if you like.

Actually, it does not really matter what I like. These event viewer
entries are caused by third-party software (McAfee in this case) when
trying to access event viewer log files (*.evt) not being generated on
your local computer while specifying neither the (correct) IP address,
the fully qualified computername nor the (correct) NetBIOS name. Only
poorly written software causes such anomalies and therefore, only the
manufacturer's tech support may know the reason for this behaviour.

Thanks for the follow up:

I did go to McAfee's site, and, interestingly they had two free scans to
check the programme was up to date and working properly. One said all was
fine and up to date, the other said there was a critical problem with the
'Common Management Agent' and it needed to be updated! Naturally said
update required a 'grant' number, which we never heard of, having received
the pc with everything pre loaded and not much accompanying paperwork.

As usual, there was no sign of an e-mail address on the site as far as I
could tell, but it did turn out that there was one among the readme's in the
programme files. And, I was quite stunned to get a read receipt when I
mailed to it!

Glad to hear it is not a problem at the XP end.

Cheers,

S
