I have win2000. I need to burn some back up disks and today my combo
drive just doesn't see the blank CD's. I've uninstalled my burner
software. All the ASPI drivers are installed. I've uninstalled and
reinstalled the DVD/CD-RW and it still can't see blank media. It reads
all the disks with programs on it just fine.

Help!!

Isn't that because a blank CD has no file system on it as it could be burned
by a PC, MAC or Linux system and until a file system is present it will
appear not to be present.

Ok maybe I am not explaining myself. I was burning back-ups just find
last week.

I can't burn anything anymore because none of burning programs I have
can detect the black CD-R I have in the drive. And I have tried
difference brands thinking it might be poor quality disks. It doesn't
make a difference. Neither Magic ISO nor Nero can detect a blank CD-R
in the drive anymore. The Nero information tool confirms that I have
the ASPI drivers installed in my system.

This happened to me - I took my tower to a local shop, we tried a new
writer and it worked.

We switched back to my original and it wouldn't see a blank CD from any
program.

Evidently there is a read/write laser that can go bad and not see a
blank CD, yet can read normal CDs.

It can't read the blank high quality disks. It doesn't make a

BTW the combo drive is just two months old and it reads disks with
data just fine.

There are any number of reasons that this can happen.

Software
Do you have any of the following installed?
RoXio Direct CD
Nero InCD
Sonic DLA
Media Players Adaptec CD burning plug-in
Any other packet writing software

Any/all of the above are known to cause problems like you are having.

Hardware
Even though the unit is practically new, you can't rule out hardware
failure.
The CD section of your combo unit uses two lasers, one for reading and one
for writing. Possible the "write" laser is burnt out.
Is there some way to substitute another CD burner for testing? It doesn't
have to be a combo unit, just something that can burn CDs. At least that'd
give you a major clue s to whether you're facing a hardware or a software
problem.
Hope for a hardware problem ... the solution is much simpler.

Nope don't have any of that soft ware installed. I don't even know
what packet writing software is. I have magic ISO and Nero 6

Unfortunately this is the only puter in the house and I don't have
another CD burner laying about.
