Playing wma files on a website doesn't work

I have been attempting to play "previews" of ringtones on the virgin mobile
website using Internet Explorer and am having no success (though I can play
them on an xp system)...

I don't get any kind of error message, just nothing happens...and when I go
into tools, options and programs, to set the default program, I don't even
see the file type wma...

If I try to open the link in a new tab, for example, the url is:

mms://stream2.modtones.com:554/wma/33741.wma

I get an error message that says:

The webpage cannot be displayed

Most likely cause:
Some content or files on this webpage require a program that you don't have
installed.

What you can try:
Search online for a program you can use to view this web content.

Retype the address.

Go back to the previous page.

Is this a Vista error, seeing as it doesn't happen in XP...is it an Internet
Explorer issue under Vista?

Any and all thoughts, ideas or solutions would be greatly appreciated...

Additionally, when I try to do the same thing under Firefox, I get a
protocol error message...

Thanks again in advance

It's definitely not a Vista error. I have listended to them many
times with IE. Just checked with Firefox 3, and a window popped up
saying I needed to choose a player for it and it suggested Media
Player.

Works just fine here. I have no clue what the problem is, but at
least you know it's not something that needs an update or hotfix.

It has ALWAYS since day one been unsupported to use an "mms://" link
directly in the browser. If Virgin is really providing you an MMS link,
that's a bug on their site that you should ask them to fix.

You should be able to open this link directly in the player.

It is inappropriate to provide an MMS link in the browser. Any MMS URL
should be wrapped with an ASX. Or use http://site/wma so that the WMServer
can give the client the ASX to hand off to the player....

there is a setting in IE7 to 'not play media files that do not play in an
external player'
if you have that enabled, some sites won't play sounds.
