Playing sound files without media player

A friend of mine is developing a multimedia program and wants to attach lots
of small audio files as links.
Do you know (or where I can find out) how to get them to play without using
media player or at least without media player popping up all the damn time?

JavaScript is one way. there is a fairly good search here:

there may be a better way depending on what the "application" is, i.e. web
or desktop, etc.
