Hi,

I disasbled the ShellEx View listing for "WMP Play As Playlist Launcher"
and that removed the context menu item but then Windows Explorer could not
make sense of WMP file associations for WMP! Thankfully I re-enabled it and
Windows Exoplorer is OK.

But I'm stll wondering how to get rid of that Right Context Item w/o
screwing up windows explorer.

Any Ideas?

Thanks,

Marc

Marc,

Any error message? Removing the shell extensions does not usually screw the
file association.

First, the "play with media player" RCMI shows up when I right-click on
files in my Video Folder! This folder has all my MPG, MPEG, and AVI files.
It does not appear in my Music Folder (Mp3, WMA, Wav files).

After disabling "WMP Play As Playlist Launcher" in the Shellex program
I can play the video files in Windows Explorer w/o a problem. But when I
click (or double-click) on an Mp3, Wave or WMA file in Windows Explorer, the
icon turns pale gray and nothing happens. I then go back and reset the file
associations. The Mp3 files will temporarily open up in
WindowsExplorer....... but then the Wave files won't.....or they'll open in
"Sound Recorder.....or I'll get a message that WMP can't play the file!

All the files play from WMP open command within the player but trying to use
Windows Explorer (the most convenient access) becomes impossible unless I
re-enable the "WMP Play As Playlist Launcher" in the Shellex program.

It would appear that this context menu item is intricately woven into XP and
WMP. Unless there is a way to remove it without totally confusing Windows
Explorer. This may seem like an unimportant issue but it indicates
Microsoft's attempt to steer you toward their software, when there are often
better options out there...especially for playing videos.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.....and thanks for taking this under
consideration.

Sasha,

I've tried to repro the problem in my system, and yes, disabling "WMP Play
As Playlist Launcher" causes the same problem as you said. "Play" action is
removed from the context-menu. Anyway, I don't see a "Play with Media
Player" option in the right-click menu.

Is it ok to rename "Play with Media Player" to "Play" ? If so, post a file
association report here.

The "Play with Media Player" option in the right-click menu shows up in my
videos folder (for some reason)....not in the music files folder!

I'm not sure how to rename the "Play with Media Player item." There is no
evidence of it in the registry or in the file associations.
