[PL] 2004 Discussion: INTERNET

"»Q«" <[email protected]>:
[about newsreaders]
See if those subcategories look better now - are other changes
needed?
http://www.pricelessware.org/2004/PL2004CategoryIndex.htm
I think that should work fine, letting people easily see all the
choices. On the eventual PL page, I think it might be a good idea to
have the 'newsreader' and 'newsreader: binary' subcategories right next
to each other, with 'newsreader tools' below them, but that's no
biggie.
Agree, I like the change to how it's laid out now.
(Note there's just one entry under newsreader tool: a trivial F/Agent add-on,
which I can't see as making it to Pricelessware.)

AGO ? A superb tool. If it hasn't been nominated, and seconded, yet
then I nominate it, or second it, now. :)
Since yEnc gained popularity, a /lot/ of users of apps which do not support
it have found their way to news.software.readers to ask for
suggestioned readers that can decode it. [...]

Since it's a widely-sought feature for binary users, seem it'd be a good
help for PL2004 winners to have their yenc support mentioned as part of
their descriptions? (A "find" on the current nominations page brings up
only 2 hits as now.)

Online AND offline functionality in newsreaders is also a
widely-sought feature. Newreaders that DON'T have that should also
have that mentioned as part of their descriptions.

Regards, John.

So, Forte Free Agent has failed the nominations phase once again?
Don't many people use it? A tool for Agent was nominated, but not the
free version of the program? I was reluctant to nominate it myself,
because the last free version I've tried was 1.21 and I don't know if
the newer free versions have severe limitations. Do they?

If anything the next version of Free Agent will have more features.
Not less.
Anyway, here goes: I nominate Forte Free Agent.

< snip >

Seconded.

Not less.

You mean you predict less severe limitations in the future? ;)
I assume you meant to second the current version of FreeAgent rather
than future ones.

yProxy 1.2.
http://www.brawnylads.com/software/
was the early-on method of working with yEnc in Agent.
It should also work with Free Agent.
The new Free Agent 2.0, in beta testing, should support yEnc.
I am sure you are right, but are many people in need of such a
feature? I don't subscribe to a premium usenet service and cannot get
a binary even if I wanted to. My guess is the same applies to the
majority of usenet users, but I could be wrong.

I agree. Dedicated music and video downloaders use programs better
designed for that purpose. Most Agent users spend very little time
downloading binaries.
I have tried other programs and the only one that has left me
half-satisfied so far has been XanaNews. All others seemed to be
either online-only (XNews-Pravda) or too glossy for my taste
(MesNews). I guess I have grown too fond of the Agent interface.
If there was no full version, what would you use for news
reading/posting?

PS. I've not noticed anyone mention corrupt downloads with
Star or any other DLer. Are you using Win98? Have you tried
re-installing it? If I had to choose, I'd go with DLExpert.

For the duration of Swen, my address is inoperative.

Amphetadesk (2 Browser Tool)

There are several freeware news aggregators, but they are all
primitive, clumsy, slow, and they crash often. Amphetadesk may not be
the best of them, either! Not sure this program belongs on the
Pricelessware list. There are several free, web-based news
aggregators which do the job a lot faster and better. My favorite is
http://www.bloglines.com/

George Skandalidis

PS. I've not noticed anyone mention corrupt downloads with
Star or any other DLer. Are you using Win98? Have you tried
re-installing it? If I had to choose, I'd go with DLExpert.

Star was tested on a Win 2000 SP4 partition. IE 5.01 SP4. No, I
didn't try to reinstall it. To tell you the truth, though it shames
me to say so, I was a bit angry when I found out. I had downloaded
all drivers for my system to have the updated versions on a single cd,
only to get useless files. Other downloads were corrupt, too. I can't
make out the exact percentage, but it was more than noticeable. And
there was no pattern: different sites, straight links, no sign of
anomalies, big files, small files, zips, exes...
Yes, DLExpert is a wise choice. I've been using it for years. It's
now the downloader on the Win98 partition. I only wish the author had
continued developing it. With a better handling of redirected links,
it could be a clear winner. Very good as it stands, though.

G

George Skandalidis

I also had some problems (Win2k) with incomplete/corrupt downloads
using Star Downloader. A major aggravation when I am not warned.

Indeed. Also, unless checksums are provided by the site, I do not
know of a way to test the integrity of an .exe file. I mean it is not
an archive, which one can test via one's archiver.
I've been using NetTransport (AKA Net Transport) recently. It is
fairly feature rich, has a reasonably clean interface, is moderately
good with redirects, and doesn't have too many limitations.

Thanks. I'll give it a go one of these days.
My basis for comparison is Flashget, which I generally liked.

Shhh... My first ever downloader was JetCar, as it was then named.
Then DAP, then this group and DLExpert.

Thanks; good to hear.

While I'm at it, I noticed that I'd not submitted links and
descriptions for FTP Wanderer and FTP Server (Pablo Vandermeer's
programs).

In case this is the right forum to submit these, they should read:

--------------
FTP Client: FTP Wanderer
Version 2.0
OS: Win9x/NT/XP

FTP Wanderer is a multithreaded FTP client with the look-and-feel of
Windows Explorer, and makes moving files between the Internet and your
computer as simple as local file manipulation.

Download link: http://www.pablovandermeer.nl/downloads.html

--------------

FTP Server: Quick and Easy FTP Server
Version 1.76
OS: Win9x/NT/XP

Quick 'n Easy FTP Server is a multi threaded FTP server for Windows
98/NT/XP that can be easily setup even by inexperienced users.
The user interface of the program is simple and intuitive, with several
sections for managing the users, configuration and security.
New users can be easily created by an wizard who is guiding you step by
step in the process. The server handles all basic FTP commands with
support for virtual directories and IP blocking.

AFAIK, Free Agent doesn't support Yenc therefore making it ineffective, if
not useless, as a binary news downloader.

YProxy is available as freeware from http://www.brawnylads.com, and
enables Free Agent to read Yenc without difficulty. It might be less
convenient to have a "two-piece" reader, but if Free Agent has other
charms, this small extra will remove the Yenc objection.
