Ah ... in that case, I nominate:

Program: AVA FIND 1.5.
Category: File Utilities
Type: Liteware version of payware program.
Homepage: http://www.think-less-do-more.com/avafind/

Ava Find caches file names, and so you can find any file more or less
instantly if you can remember part of the file name. Not a big burden on
the system, as compared to programs that index file contents as well. I
learned about Ava Find from a very favorable recommendation on ACF.
Features of the payware version ("Scout Bot", whatever that is) are
available for 30 days, then disabled. But the file find feature is the only
thing I've used anyway.

2xExplorer would still be my choice for file manager, though actually I'm
using the new incarnation, xplorer2 (alpha 0.0.0.49). I can make it crash
though, but not enough to be a bit bother. I left Servant Salamander and
then Turbo Navigator for 2x and x2. Think I'll stick with 2x/x2 until I
hear about something that's definitely superior.

Seconded, but with a note attached:...program runs fine and is
extremely useful IMHO, but - *IF I have understood it correctly* -
when installed all shareware features are enabled and will be disabled
when the 30 day eval period expires (Liteware with a forced all-
features-demo-period...). AFAIk this is mainly (or only) the "Scout
Bot" feature - a program that monitors all disks for new files and
adds them to the search database (called "search cache")
automatically. I'm not saying the program is not useful without this
feature, not at all - one can perform manual update scans - "Refresh
....search cache" - when needed (aka scan-on demand), and for most
users this will be more than good enough. IMHO only if your system is
very active in terms of constantly adding new files will the "Scout
Bot" be missed, or if you are of the forgetful types that forget to
invoke a manual scan before you search for files that have yet to been
added to the AVA Find database with a manual update scan. For this
reason.

I have not seen any other free (lite or full version) alternatives to
this one, at least not a GUI alternative and with similar features.

If it is not too late, can I suggest the program that I made, "Ant
Renamer", www.antp.be/software/renamer ?
It is free (opensource/gpl), and supports unicode file & folder names.

I vaguely recall that this version of Power Archiver needs an extra
DLL to be added in order to handle the revised .RAR formats. I
believe I got it from an archive called "Free UnRAR", but don't recall
the link. I suspect it would be useful for new downloaders to be
aware that such an enhancement is available and called for.

If desired, I could go looking for the UnRAR site, but I suspect
someone has that data at their fingertips and can just supply it here.

Correct. It is the unrar.dll for the Winrar 3.x compression. It's available
at the Winrar website in a self-extracting archive. Just replace the old
unrar.dll in the Power archiver folder with this new one.
