HI ALL,

I'm try to help someone who in turn is trying to help someone else with a PK
Zip problem. I don't have too many of the details just that they have
installed and reinstalled PKZip twice and the person still can't open any
zipped files. I don't know what exact error messages they are getting but
she said the weird thing is they get different ones each time. Does anyone
have a clue as to what the problem could be? The only suggestion I had was
to try forcing it by right clicking on a zip file and then selection "Open
With" and then picking PKzip from the list and then putting a check mark in
the box that says "Always use this program to open files of this type" but I
haven't heard back from her if that has solved the issue. They are running
Windows 2000 with the latest SP which I believe she said was SP4. Is there
possibly a security feature in Win 2000 that has to be addressed in order to
allow opening of zip files? I don't have Win 2000 and never have so I don't
know how that OS operates. Any suggestions?
TIA
Peggy

The error msgs would be very helpful if you could post them.

There is nothing in win2k that prevents opening a zip file, assuming the zip app is installed

Thank you all for recommending other programs but that is not an option. I
believe they have already bought and paid for PKZip. I was hoping to get an
answer on how to get this program that is already installed working. I
guess they could always call tech support but we all know what a nightmare
that can be so I was hoping to get an answer here.

My first thought is that it's an old version of zip as it isn't called
PK too often nowadays. You might suggest they try a newer version of a
zip extractor, like http://zipcentral.iscool.net/

There are many different programs which work with Zip files
Pkzip is from http://www.pkzip.com
Winzip is from http://www.winzip.com

Well... an answer to just EXACTLY what?
There is not enough information for anyone to try and help

Version and patch level of Windoze
Version of Pkzip
Does Pkzip work with OTHER files
What was used to create the file
Is the file encrypted
And, as mentioned, the EXACT error message

If by "tech support" you're referring to Microsoft's tech support, they couldn't
or wouldn't be able to help since PKZip is not one of their products.

Since this newsgroup specializes in issues related to Windows 2000 operating
systems,
you would be better served by contacting the software author (PKWARE) itself.

Here's a link to start from:
