Received fromApple word DAT file format - how to open

[Scruffy Curmudgeon]

An Apple user claims that he sent me a Word document, but the file extension
is "DAT" and opening with a text editor display compressed or encoded file
with PK near beginning but the file is not in fact a PKZIP or other ZIP
file?
