Pixma Ip4000 problem with print head

I have a Canon Pixma IP4000 printer and no matter what I do, I cannot
get the print head to move to the middle. The manual says you simply
open the cover, but it doesn't do it. The printer's status light is
solid green. Has anyone else had this problem? Am I doing something
wrong?

I don't know if the inner cover, behind the paper output tray, is
connected electrically or not to the centering mechanism. But pulling
that cover down has no effect either? Just a wild guess anyway. I
tried both of my printers (iP4000 and iP5000) and the print head does
center without lowering the inner cover.

Have you tried re-setting the electrical plug. I know that several of my
house appliances require this annoying reset. But it does work. I did
have an electrical problem with my iP4000 and a reset did solve it.

Yes, pulling down the inner cover doesn't do anything either. I looked
all over the web to see if others had this problem but I didn't find a
single piece of info. I'm guessing it's not a common problem and looks
like there is something defective. :(

What is the re-setting the electrical plug you mention?

Thanks.

I have the ip500
All I do is to lower the front flap and raise the top cover and wait
couple of seconds, first the head will half come out then go back an
then finally come to a halt in the middle, closing the flaps it wil
re-set, for this to happen I left the CD tray flap cover closed o
should we call it the inner flap..

The operation I guess is either done by micro switches o
opto-coupler, something 'has' to sense the flaps are opening, coul
it be this sensor..

The first question is why you want to open the top..? are the in
tanks empty, was the printer working ok prior to the ink tank
emptying.....or simply did it just stop printing for no reason...

Could anything have dropped inside to cause this..

Are you under warranty? If so you are in luck, from my understanding
of the process such an error gets you a new printer with ink, rather
then the usual referb replacement without head or ink. It's a good
deal, good error.

Looking at the front of the printer when you open the lid there should
be a square hole with a black microswitch on the inside, directly above
on the lid you should notice a protruding bit o plastic in the shape
of two triangles. it's very much tward the rear, and tward the right
of the opening. Odds are you have a faulty microswitch which might be
resolve by pushing the black button with a pencil, smacking it, or if a
spring is sprung you might be able to lift it using small tweezers.

I checked the service manual and it doesn't list an alternative means
of centering the heads other than opening the lid. I can't even tell
if that microsoft is a part of the logic board QM2-1548-000, nor can I
tell if those covers left and right tward the rear can be removed.

zakezuke,

Thanks! That microswitch was the problem. I poked it a few times and
eventually the print head came out to the middle. I don't think it's
under warranty anymore so this will have to do.

watch out with that poking microswitches... I'm sure it's illegal in
some places :O)

By re-setting he means pull the power plug out of
the wall socket so that all power to the printer
is off. (Printers are often power all the time at
a very low rate even when the switch on the
printer is off.) You do the same with any
electronic equipment when it gets a glitch in the
temporary memory, especially anything that has a
remote, which means that the component is always
powered to be able to receive the remote command.

Or you could check on the price of QM2-1548 from your friendly
neighborhood canon parts supplier. Service centers are listed on the
website. I don't know for a fact the microswitch is mounted on it, but
given it's location the odds are pretty good. More likely you can find
someone with an ip4000 or i860 with good mechanics but a bum head on
the cheap. But it's also possible you can poke, twiddle, and slap
your way to happyness.

I'm not sure if you can move the head when the printer is off, while
not the best thing I imagine one could print, unplug, replace ink, and
resume.
