how can i find out if my pc has a pixel shader supported graphics card?

Hello. If you....

1) Click Start.
-2) Click Run.
--3) In the new Run box that appears type dxdiag.
---4) Press OK.

The dxdiagwindow will pop up, if you then click on the display tab it will
list the graphics card in your machine.... If you post back here or search
on the internet with that card and chip type I'm sure someone will let you
know what features that card has.

Thanks for that - the headers that I can see when I run DXdiag are
"System: DirectX files; Display; Sound1; Sound2; Music; Input; Network: More
Help"

I can't see any mention of a graphics card under any of those tabs. DirectX
seems to have something to do with graphics (sorry if this is obvious - I'm a
complete computer beginner!) and I have version 9.0C, if that helps to answer
my original question!

Have a look over: http://www.windowsresource.net/guides/hardware.php that
should be what you're seeing, 3rd image down of the display tab, the bits
under the device section.

If that's no good scroll on down the page and there's a section called "the
device manager" follow the instructions there, if the above didn't work this
*has* too.

I have done as you suggested and the info is as follows:

Processor : AMD Athlon XP2600+, MMX, 3DNow, ~2.1GHz
Memory: 512MB RAM
Direct X Version: DirectX9.0C 4.09.0000.0904
Display Name: Radeon 7500 Series
Maunuf: ATI Technolgies Inc
Approx Total Memory: 64.0MB
Sound : Name: Realtek AC97 audio
Free Disk Space: 66.1GB

According to the Eido website, the game that I want to buy (for our son's
birthday - hence the issue - I couldn't stand the disappointment if he opened
it and then it didn't work!) requires :
"100% DirectX 9.0-compatible 32MB Direct3D Card with Vertex and Pixel Shader
v1.1 Support"

Do you think it sounds like it might work on our pc?

Thanks

Unfortunately the Radeon 7500 doesn't support pixel shader 1.1. 8-(

However cards that do support it, the Radeon 8500 / Geforce 3 (excluding
Geforce 4MX) and up are pretty cheap, in many cases about the same price as
a game.

Hi praax1,

Unfortunately your onboard graphics doesn't meet the
system requirements for that game: GRAPHICS:
100% DirectX 9 compatible 32meg Direct3D Card with Pixel Shader Support

Your choice now is wether or not that game is important
enough to justify investing in a compatible video card.

My son wants to play Lego Indiana Jones
Error Message that my graphics card doesn´t support pixel shaders.
I have a GeForce4 MX 440 AGP 8X -graphics card. Must I buy a new card
to be able to play this game?

Yes, your video card is ancient, best AGP nVidia card you can buy is the
nVidia 7800 GS. Just make sure the box says "AGP" somewhere on it.

Average lifespan of the PC is 3-4 years, I'm guessing your system is about
5-6 years old?

Hello, I am quite the newbie here and also very new to installing and
playing PC games. We have the Star Wars game and after installation an
fatal error message says I cannot run on my computer because I do not
have Pixel Shader v1.1. Funny thing is I can run Star Wars II! So I
ran a test online to determine what games I can and cannot run on my
computer. Turns out it says I cannot run either Star Wars or Star Wars
II because I do not have the pixel shader. But I'm running Star Wars II
and it's playing perfectly fine! How can that be? I'm also playing
Lego Indiana Jones with no problems at all. That's why I'm wondering if
there is a setting I am missing. How can I get Star Wars to start
playing? Please, please help )

There are a fair number of Star Wars games - which do you mean when you say
"Star Wars" and "Star Wars II"?

This online tester - sounds pretty unreliable if it says you can't run a
game which you in fact are! Pixel shading is a feature of your graphics
cards (aka video cards/adapters) - you either got it or you ain't. If you
haven't and you want it, you need to get a new card (ensuring your system
can handle it). Best bet is to check the system requirements on the
packaging of the games, then compare that with what you've got. If you have
no system specs with your machine or the packaging of any new graphics card
you may have bought yourself, then

Control Panel > Display > Settings > "Advanced" button > "Adapter" tab

will show you what you've got under Adapter Type / Chip Type, and how much
memory it's got under "Memory size". Then hit the web to look for details of
that particular make and model, especially for pixel shading.
