Pivot table column limits

Does anyone know the limit to the number of columns that a pivot table can be
created from?

I'm working on some requirements for pivot tables and it looks like I will
have at least 40 columns that could potentially be in the pivot table. Since
I've never built one that large (and don't actually have enough data to build
a test), I wanted to know if there is a physical limit to the pivot table.

See "Excel Specifications and limits" for more detailed info. Your actual
column count is only limited by memory. However, you are limited to 256 page
& data fields. Note that Standard XL only has 256 columns, so if you try to
exceed that, XL will spit a warning at you, and only display part of your
PivotTable.

Bottom line:
With only 40, you should be fine.

First, I assume you mean how many column of data in the raw data, not how
many column can be output to the display?

Second, Specifications doesn't address the number of fields in the source
range. What it says is that the number of column fields in the pivot table
report is only limited by available memory.

Third, If you are talking about how many field in the raw data, the answer
is version dependent. 2003 and earlier have only 256 column in a sheet, 2007
has 16,384
