Pivot column field orientation

Greetings,
I can change the formatting of a pivot column field to
vertical text orientation. How do I retain this format
after refreshing the table? (goes back to original format
whatever I do up to now)

Thanks for your response. I should have mentioned that I
am running Excel 97. I followed your advice (Pivot
toolbar/Pivot Table/Options/Preserve Formatting ticked)but
the formatting immediately reverts to horizontal and
autofit column widths. Any ideas?

Is Enable Selection turned on? (From the Pivot toolbar, choose
PivotTable>Select, and click on Enable Selection)
