I've been running a pirated copy of Win XP Pro Corporate for a long time and the
new v5 Update site is kicking my ass. I'm tired and ready to give up. What do
I need to do to make my copy legit? I don't want to reformat and start from
scratch.

What's it going to cost?

Buy it - make sure that you have a qualifying MS OS if you buy the upgrade
version of XP.

You will need to purchase it. XP home goes for approx. $199 retail and
pro goes for approx $299 retail. If you purchase a retail copy, you
could could do am in place upgrade. That allows you to reinstall over
what you have without losing your data and change the PID. If you
purchase an OEM, it would cost less, but those usually don't allow any
option but a format and reinstall. If you can make a backup, you may
want to consider getting OEM Good luck.

Bob;
That will not work in this case.
That will work if both are Volume License.
In this case, original is Volume License and new will be Retail.
The two types are incompatible.

You need to purchase and use a _legitimate_ full retail copy of
WinXP Pro to perform a repair (a.k.a. in-place upgrade) installation,
using the new CD and Product Key.

Sorry.

It didn't occur to me that the license type must change, unless the OP has
access to a valid volume license (very unlikely).

So what's the bottom line? Buy a retail copy of XP Pro and then do a "repair"
installation? Will that take care of it, even though my pirated copy was the
corporate edition and the legitimate copy would just be a retail version?

Sinbad

John;
Yes, the bottom line is buy Windows XP Pro and perform a Repair
Installation.

Greetings --

Yes, the retail copy will overwrite the pirated VL copy.
