Dear Readers:

I have a network of 3 computers. When I view the Network in an Explorer
window I can see the computers that are turned on (I can see their shared
folders). However, if I try to ping those computers' names I get "request
timed out" errors. How can I ping?

My ultimate goal is to send an echo command to one of the computers to let
the user know that I am running a remote backup on their pc using a Windows
Home Server console.

Thanks in advance,

Windows (or 3rd party) firewall blocks ICMP packets. Take a look at your
firewall exception list.

Dear John:
I am using a 3rd party s/w for firewall. I have Windows Firewall turned
off. I created a new ICMP rule and ICMPv6 rule to allow bi-directional comm.
between the computers but the request still "timed out". The rules are at
the bottom of the list. Should I move them to the top and see what happens?

Is it possible that you didn't configure it correctly? Won't hurt to move
the rule to the top and re-test it.
