I have a Toshiba M200 laptop that connects fine to the internet either by
WiFi or Ethernet at work. I want to share the internet connection on my main
PC at home with the laptop via ethernet.

I set up internet connection sharing and it works ok - I'm able to share
files between the two computers. I can even ping any internet site from the
command line, but the browser won't connect, not even with plain IP numbers.

I have an icon in the tray that shows connectivity through the host computer
to the internet.

This problem occurs whether the WiFi is turned on or off.

Both firewalls are turned off.

When the LAN cable is plugged in, if I try to load a local HTML file, the
browser acts strangely and takes nearly a minute to load the page. This
problem does not occur when the cable is uplugged.

What's wrong?

Thanx, Jeff

Questions below...

So your home PC is connected to the internet, your portable is connected to
the home PC by Ethernet, you are trying to access the internet - correct?

From your portable you can ping remote (internet) sites by hostname and IP
address.
From your portable, internet explorer can't find anywhere.
Both correct?

Hold on, if it loads the page, why do you say it isn't working above?

Possibly, Internet Explorer is configured to go through a specific proxy or
gateway which is available at work, but not at home. I would look at IE
"Tools menu", "Options", "Connections" and see if any gateways or similar
are configured in the LAN settings. If there are, note them down, remove
them, close and reopen IE and try now. If this works, talk to your work
support people to get them to create a mechanism for using one set of config
at home, another at work.

P.S. If you can ping, there is probably nothing wrong with Winsock!
