Ping but not browse

D

Dodgie

I'am totally confused. I have 4 computers all connected by ethernet to
an adsl router. 3 desktops running Win XP, and a Tablet running XP
Tablet edition. The tablet works fine, internet works, pages all load
as normal. But with the other 3 desktops, i can ping webpages but
cannot browse them at all.

I have tried formatting my desktop, and it makes no difference. Any
help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Check the DNS in your TCP/IP configuration on your desktops,Then try to ping
the DNS if you got the reply it's suposed that you will be able to browse

Dodgie,

Along the same lines, You can change the DNS settings temporarily to check
if it's a DNS problem.
Select Start > Settings > Network Connections > right-click your connection,
select 'Properties'. In the 'General' tab, click on 'Internet Protocol
(TCP/IP)' > click on 'Properties'. If you have 'Obtain DNS server address
automatically' checked, you will need to re-check this option when returning
to your default settings.
To test your DNS with a working server, select 'Use the following DNS server
addresses', then using your keyboard 'arrow' keys, type 4.2.2.2 as the
'Preferred' DNS Server & 4.2.2.3 as the 'Alternate' DNS Server. click OK
twice, log out of windows, log in and try using Internet Explorer.

Nothing seems to be helping. Occasionally i can get to a website on my
desktops. For example i can go to www.google.com but the heading wont
load, and if i try to search it does nothing. I have tried to change
the DNS settings, but i cant seem to find whats wrong. Thanks.

if you can open a cmd prompt and ping www.google.com successfully then I
doubt very much that it is a DNS issue, but even better do
"nslookup www.google.com" and if you get a valid result back then it isn't
DNS.

My first thought is spyware/virus on your systems, or a software firewall.

if you can get onto your router sometimes they have an option to test
connectivity by pinging either a hostname or an IP address. Get the ip of
google (from your tablet or one of your pcs) and then try pinging from the
router, by name preferably.

If you can ping websites then ICMP traffic is getting out of your router
and back in, so I don;t think there is connectivity issues
between your network and hte internet, something may be blocking port 80
traffic - which is why I said maybe a software firewall.

Two things that worry me though are that 1st; later in your posts you say
that occasionally you can get to a page, but things don;t display, the
example you gave was google. This implies to me that port 80 traffic is
working but its not getting through properly which is why I suggested
maybe spyware/virus.

2nd; you say you have formatted your desktop and it makes no difference,
formatting should clear everything off.

try checking for spyware/virus and try pinging from your router. also what
error is your browser returning

I have tired spyware removal software and it cant find anything, and my
anti virus software cannot either. Is it possible for the problem to be
with the router, as it somehow directs all traffic from port 80 to one
computer??

If it is a NAT router this shouldn't be a problem, the return traffic for
a PC will be delivered to the requesting PC, even if you have a website
published on port 80.

Just out of interest do you have any port forwarding set up on your router?

Do you have a software firewall on any of your machines?

Have you indeed formatted your desktop machines and reinstalled windows?

can you resolve domain names successfully from your router?

can you ping your router?

I have no port forwarding on the router. I only have windows firewall.
I formatted one desktop, and disconnected the rest form the network,
and it still did not work. I can ping the router.

I have found something that might be of help. When i have the tablet
(the working computer) connected to the router, it says that "Ethernet
Link Status: UP", but when i remove the tablet from the network and
have just the desktop it says "Ethernet Link Stats: Down". Hopefully
you may understand why this is. Thanks for your help

when the tablet is unplugged can you ping from the worksation, and what
can you ping and what can't you ping?

Hi,

Is all 3 desktop running Win xp are configured to obtain Ip and DNS
address automatically? If not set both the IP and DNS to obtain address
automatically from, network connection--properties--tcp/ip ,properties
and set both as auto.

Hope this will help you.

It saya ethernet link status is up or down when i connect to the router
through the browser. Eg. 192.168.1.1. I can still ping even with the
satus down.

All computers alread have IP and DNS to obtain automatically. Its not
like it has always been like this. It was working fine for about 2
weeks and then it stopped working on the desktops.
