Ping: Bob Adkins Re: Install vs. Executables

A few days ago, you posted a thread about several good utilities, we
talked then about install/copy/uninstall, then run the executable.
I've usually had good luck with converting a program previously
installed (W98SE) converting to executable only.

But, recent results:
Winpatrol- did a new install/uninstall as above. The executable runs
fine, I've checked "run at windows startup", but when I do my daily cold
boot, it is not resident in my system tray. In Startup Control Panel
HLKM Run, it shows and should start up.

Also, in one day I did the install/uninstall on both Winpatrol and
Ziprepair. That evening, shutdown froze, had to shut off prematurely-
very unusual for me. Only change that day was the above.

Comment?

There are certainly others in ACF that like executables- Karen, Boomer,
etc. I don't have a webpage, but can you suggest a way to compile an
ongoing list of executables for those of us who like them? I'd be glad
to add to it.

Your thoughts?

Nils Sofer has a bunch of nice executables on his site. He is one of the
few authors that does not use an installer.
I have gotten to the point that I avoid installs unless I really need
the program.

Hi Mike,

We have a start on that -> the program information pages.

When I have that information it's noted on in Col. I (n.i. = no install,
n.r. = no registry entries). (Pages can be sorted on that column.)

For example - see the FILE UTILITIES page:

http://www.pricelessware.org/2004/programs/P_FILEUTILITIES.php

Posting lists of no install programs would be helpful.

The n.i. notation is for programs that start out as "no install" - not
for execs that can be separated from the rest of the package. I think a
separate list might be necessary for those. . .

Instead of a separate list for execs that can be separated from the
rest of a package. What about - a two letter code to indicate that it
is indeed possible to separate the exec - as a link to a single page
explaining how its done. In other words, ALL links would point to the
same single page.

A single page is all thats needed because there are a limited number
of ways of doing it.

Just knowing that it is possible, is the most important thing.

You are right - a separate list isn't necessary - I could note such
programs as n.x.

I'll need lists for apps that should be noted that way. . .

Got me there! WiPatrol runs fine on my XP machine.

If "Start With Windows" is not checked, it barks at me and pops up the
window when starting Windows. I check "Start With Windows" and it starts
minimized with no barking.
Also, in one day I did the install/uninstall on both Winpatrol and

Never a lockup with WinPatrol. I don't think I've ever tried Ziprepair...
yet!

Jeez! I have HUNDREDS of them! Sounds like work to me! :)

A while back a couple of us posted our "1 File Wonders" on the Freeware
binary group. Maybe we can do it again.

Thanks, Susan.

I checked the link and see the notation. But that is not a good source
for me, sorry. There are LOTS of good programs that don't happen to make
it to that list, some IMO are better than the popular choice, so I use
them. So I hope to see a separate list.

BTW, WindriversExpert is now shareware MyDrivers.

Yes, maybe in small segments, build it up over time.

But please, *not* in the binary group. I use individual.net and can't
see ACB. All we need is the name, brief description and the link.
Thanks for the tip! I'll check it out!

Popular choice??? The program information pages are for programs
*mentioned* in ACF. If you have programs you would like added to those
pages post your list (please include at least the name *and* URL).

there's a LFW (last freeware) version of WindriversExpert.

Aahh, as you said, right at the top of the page. My intent is a list
limited to no-install only.

PathCopy is listed as n.i., it is clearly an install. Maybe the dll's
can be copied into the System folder, I don't know. I always used this
fine program as a normal install, it's a shell extension.

Okay - good luck with that. If you create such a list I'll "borrow" the
info for the program info pages. ;)

Susan:
I will make a start on it. As Bob says, it could get to be a big list,
so maybe small steps at first, letting it build as it goes.

It needs a home, as I, and hopefully others, will keep adding to it in a
few broad categories, with updates/corrections. Someone would need to
compile the changes.

Could you include it as a separate list under your pricelessware
listing? That would seem a natural place. I've always felt this list was
missing in the comprehensive pricelessware listings.

Your comments?

Hello Mike,

I just uploaded revised program info pages: 3050 apps listed now

I'm still working on revising URL's, adding authors etc. etc. etc. If
you could review and add to/ revise the n.i. info that would be a *big*
help.

I added the n.i. column to the P_Program Index page - that adds another
10 percent to its size (((sob))):

http://www.pricelessware.org/2004/programs/P_ProgramIndex.php?sortby=I

If you sort that page on Col. I you will have a list of all the n.i.
programs (that are noted) in alphabetical order (each P_prog category
page can also be sorted).

I could extract a list of n.i. apps for separate pages but IMO it's
better to stay with *one* set of pages - for several reasons - one of
the main ones being time - *one* set is 14 pages to create and upload
whenever I make changes in the data (and *another* 14 pages if I make
changes in the notes on the web pages) - I really don't want to create a
second set for n.i. apps only. . . .
