Ping and so on

i decided to network my laptop to my desktop via a 5m crossover cable, it
started with me pulling my hair out at the fact that my desktop would not
ping, so then i changed the the slot it was pluged into. hara it worked, ran
the network set up wizard and still i do not seem to be able to connect the
two machines, it would be dead handy to share file, printer and net
connection (which it through the built in LAN connection). my desktop is
running xp pro with sp2 with patch and laptop is xp home sp2 with patch, am i
missing something?

Open Start, Control Panel, Network Connections, Right Click Local Area
Connection, Properties, Advanced Tab, Settings Button, Exceptions Tab,
check File and Printer Sharing.

See if that works.

nice idea but the XP home does not have that option for some reason and the
pro machine is checked, one thing i did notice is that it returned TTL64 on
the desktop and TTL128 on the laptop but i think this is just the LAN card

Oh, yeah. Sorry. For XP Home, you might want to make sure simple
file sharing is enabled. Open "My Computer" and click on "Tools" then
go to "Folder Options..." and then go to the "View" tab. Scroll all
the way to the bottom and check "Use simple file sharing"
