Ping -a won't resolve to hostname

N

N. John Lynton

I have the reverse lookup set and delegations. I read
article listed here.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/techinfo/reskit/en-
us/default.asp?url=/windows2000/techinfo/reskit/en-
us/cnet/cncf_imp_dewg.asp

When I ping an address with a -a all I get is the IP
address, no host name resolution. Hostname to IP works
fine though.

Anyone have any ideas? Please email me if you would.

Make sure that you are querying the server that actually holds this reverse lookup zone. You may just want to test with NSLOOKUP. Run NSLOOKUP. Verify
that the DNS server you connect to is the server with the reverse zone. If not type "server IP" where IP is the IP of this server. Press enter. At the prompt type
"set type=ptr" press enter. Then type the IP address of the record you want. Does this resolve? If not, then something is wrong with the reverse zone.

Thank you,

Run nslookup. Enter "set d2". Then enter the IP address.

You'll get a trace showing who and what is being queried,
and the results thereof. That will usually point you to the problem.
