Pictures in word documents

Just a couple of q's that a driving me insane on a report i'm trying to
write, any help would be greatly appreciated

Firstly i have photos inserted , if i reduce them down to 12% they print
fine, if i go to 10 % the prints are stips of the same part of the photo
repeating itself ie no good.

Secondly can i not put 2 photos side by side in the text with a caption
beneath both? I've messed about for ages trying to do this but it just won't
let me.

If you have to reduce the image so much, I would (working on a copy of the
photos) resize them to a more manageable size, so you either dont have to
reduce them in Word or reduce them by a smaller amount (ie 75%). The files in
Word still retain most of there original file information hence when you
reduce the print-file contains the mass of information and can "confuse" the
spooling to the printer. Have a huge (either original file size, eg 10x8, or
high resolution) original photo will not ensure a good quality output through
Word. Reducing the original photo file to a smaller size and less resolution
should not impair your output quality and will also reuce your Word file size
as well.

Use a borderless two-column, one-row table and have each photo in each cell
to have them side-by-side. Sizing to fit the cell.
