Pictures file extensions swap?

Is it possible to rename or re-save a picture file with
a .bmp extention to a .jpg extention? Or do I need the
original source file for download? I want to open up some
room on my hdd.

i rename ext's all the time from bmp to jpg/gif
no problems so far. not sure about file size
because i have 99% open space.

Not possible to change the file format simply by renaming the file.

However, a .bmp file can be converted to a more economical format through
the use of an image utility. Here's a good free one...

Be aware that there is a quality trade-off which cannot be recovered by
converting back to the original file type.

Changing the name of a file doesn't change its format or its
size. One of my favorite stories is about the time Abraham
Lincoln, while making a speech, asked his audience "if you call
its tail a leg, how many legs does a sheep have?" When everyone
in the audience called out "five," Lincoln replied,

"Nope. Four. Calling it a leg doesn't make it one."

However most graphics programs, including MSPaint, have the
ability to read bmp files and convert their format (and name) to
jpg.

You can convert bmp to jpg using almost any image manipulation package.
You can use Paint under Start>Accessories. File>Open the .bmp file, then
File>Save As, change Save As Type to jpg.
