picture thumbnails stopped working

"My pictures" folder used to have a little blue image on it and when I
opended a file in it, I could select "Thumbnail" as a display option. I
upgraded to Office 2000 and now the little image is gone and the thumbnail
option doesn't work and there is a zd thumbnail icon in the file. How do I
get the thumbnail display option functional again? Thanks in advance. BJN
