Picture text/Hyperlink Screentips?

P

Peter Goldfield

I have lots of pictures on lots of pages that the picture alt text seems
inappropriate, and would like to put info in the hyperlink properties
screentips. Not really sure what the difference is but...
Is there a "bulk" way to get to picture alt text, delete it, click the check
box (to uncheck) then go to hyperlink screentips and enter an identical line
of text.

No is the answer I'm expecting but can anyone surprise me?

Alt text is displayed in the image placeholder before the image itself is downloaded, and is also used if someone is browsing your page in text-only mode and thus would not be able to see the pictures to know what they are

Screen tips pop up when a user leaves their mouse on top of a hyperlink for a few seconds, and can be used for stuff like a help baloon, directions, comments, etc

Internet Explorer will take any Alt text that you have entered for a picture, and automatically display it to as a screen tip. Actually, if you are using a picture as a hyperlink, and have alt text present, it will override anything you may have typed in as a screentip in the hyperlink properties

As far as removing all of your Alt text, I suppose you could do a Find-->Replace for Alt= in your whole web (or just one page), and leave the replace field blank. That would erase every instance of Alt= in your HTML. Make a backup copy first though, as you can not undo this.

Peter,

I am not sure where you are going with this. However, if
you wish to use the screentip, use title="whatever" VS
alt, as it will be viewable in Netscape with the title tag.

I don't remember where I read this, but my understanding
is that alt support may be on the way out.

Thanks both, that answers my question and I can undestand why the alt
support might be on the way out - in my case if they are browsing in text
only mode that would be pretty crazy - it's a picture site!

Bit scary replacing all alt= , but great tip - I'll do them one by one!
